Crooked Shops - Share your Experience!

I go to a muffler shop and ask the guy there can he put true dual exhaust on my 88' Ranger from exhaust manifold to bumper. He said sure. About a week later I pick it up and it cost me $300. I figure that is not so bad, but my truck sounds strange, I crawl under the cab and see he cut after the catalytic converter and welded in a one to two muffler and added a extra pipe out the back. I got no satisfaction out of the argument. Then a month later the muffler fell out....:annoyed:

we took our 2001 dodge one-ton to a shop in missisippi to get the clutch and slave replaced.

long story short, the shop stole the transmission out of our truck and replaced it with a unit from a junk yard with fried bearings and no seals.

got back to ohio before i could convince my mom that changing the clutch can't change the gear ratios on a transmission.

ick... some of you guys really got the shaft.

The WORST i've had happen was a speaker install for the Cobalt I had before the Ranger I have now. Cobalts have a special speaker fitting on the front doors, they are tear drop shaped... and the stock speaker is molded into it. An aftermarket speaker requires a fitting kit in order for it to seal correctly. Best Buy found out the hard way. Those kits weren't available to the general public at the time, only audio install bays. However, Best Buy didn't have them, nor did they want to use them. Instead, they mounted the speaker right to the door, and used sheet metal to bridge the gaps.

After the install, every time it rained, I noticed the interior was soaked, yet never really thought anything of it being related to the install. I also noticed that I was no longer able to adjust my passenger side mirror. After taking my car into the dealership to find out why the car was leaking (months later), they found that the plastic that acts like a rain guard was peeled off, I had a gaping hole with a speaker just hanging there (that's the install they did), and the guy broke my passenger mirror. The carpet was molded and destroyed. The speakers were rusted and shot (Infinity Reference 6.5"s). I had to fight to get best buy to pay for the damages, they even tried to decline it. My car was held at the dealership with doors taken apart so that the best buy insurance rep could take a peek at it. Soon as he saw the damages, they paid the bill. BUT... they never paid to FIX the doors or install the speaker correctly. They also didn't pay to replace the speakers. So, I called corporate back to chew them out for a new pair of speakers. They gave me a gift card instead. Needless to say, I used the card to get the speakers, eventually got rid of the car and still have those speakers (of which are for sale in the "garage sale")

It was a nightmare!

My wife used to insist on taking her Lincoln to Barker Lincoln & Mercury in Houma, LA. It got a check engine light and they insisted on installing a new catalytic converter. $1,362.00 I made her keep the old one and planned to take it to an ambulance chaser, but never got around to it. When it threw another check engine light I took it to Womack Ford in Concordia, KS. The service manager there said one solution was to change the catalytic converter -or- the factory threshold on emissions was set way too low and if it were raised, still well below EPA requirements, that would fix the problem. He did and it did. Too bad I didn't save the old one when I moved to KS.

"Like I'm gonna bring my car to a dealership...why don't I just flush my money down the toilet?.... "

George Costanza :D

Luckily I've never been screwed by a shop, cuz I rarely use a shop:thefinger:. I've always had the mind set that they will always try to screw you, hoping that you don't know what they are talking about. The only time I've had my truck in the shop when I could not figure out why my turn signals would not work. After a month of trying to find out why, replacing the brake switch, the turn signal lever and checking all of the fuzes I gave up and took it to a shop because I needed it fixed to sell the truck. They have it for the day and it turns out to be a bad fuze of course, I thought I checked them all but apparently I did not. After I sell the truck to a friend, he calls me up and said it did not pass inspection because the horn didn't work. I find out the fuze for the horn was missing. So I'm guessing the shop just took the horn fuse and used it for the turn signals. They didnt really screw me, but they did make the horn stop working.:icon_twisted:

I never really had a problem with a shop cause i refuse to go there and if i do someone else is paying but one of the times i went to sears (cause i crashed into a curb sideways at 45mph when 17yo) they replaced balljoint, strut, cv shaft, and bent tie rod of 800 which was fair since the had to cut out the tierod and such and actually gave us back the broken parts to show wht they had done. all but the cv which they had to turn in for the core charge.

Edward's

Anyone ever heard of Edward's Transmissions? I used to know Ed when I was a kid. I worked at the Ford dealership where my dad was GM and Ed worked across the street at the Lincoln/Merc dealer doing transmissions.
So, when I needed work, I always took my junk to Edward's.
One day I felt a slip in the drive train, and since I had Ed's rebuilt the trans a year and a half earlier, I figured it might be the transfer case.
I called Ed's to come get it, and found out that there was a new manager. I explained who I was, and he said he'd take care of me as always.
I told him that I was pretty sure that the transfer case was shot, and he said he'd look there first.
Two days later he calls and tells me the trans is screwed, and I need a rebuild, and the clutch is oil soaked. I remind him that they had just done it about 18 mos earlier, and he said he'd take care of me.
I told him to fix it, but I needed it in 3 days. He said he'd take care of me.
6 days later, he said it was done (had to rent a car).
I went to pick it up, and found the clutch (barely any wear and not a drop of oil on it.), and threw it in my car. We went for a test drive, and it did the same damned thing. I told him it was the transfer case.
We got back to the shop and he said he'd take care of me.
They sent the transmission to their main facility and finally to their "specialist" to be rebuilt.
I came back 3 days later, we drove it, and the same thing.
By now I'm seriously pissed and told the SOB that it was the freaking transfer case like I said it was to start with.
3 days later they had rebuilt the xnfer case and I went to pick it up.
I walked in and he smiled and gave me a bill for almost $3k.
I asked him what he was going to do to "take care of me"?
He starts yelling, "Dont threaten me!" and the goons in the shop start heading to the front.
There were other customers looking at him like he's an idiot, and I just calmly pointed out that I had witnesses, and I hadn't threatened him, and he really starts yelling.
So, I take my keys (dumb ass had already given them to me) and headed out to the truck, as the goof balls from the shop come running and surround me, all while this ass is screaming for me to not threaten him.
A guy from the shop next door asks if he should call the cops, and I tell him to.
2 show up,. and this guys is still screaming that I'm threatening him.
I'm calm as a cucumber, and tell the cop what's happening.
The cop tells him that he can't hold me or the truck, and that he has the right to sue and put a lien on the vehicle, but that's all.
The guy then tells the cop that I have a crack pipe in my truck.
He asks if he can search it, and I tell him that I'd be good with that, but that I haven't had the truck for 3 weeks, and I don't know what he'll find.
Guess what he finds?
But he's not so dumb, and says that it looks pretty suspicious.
I tell the cop that I'll pay for the xnfer case rebuild, but that's it, and the cop tells the guy to take the money, then he tells me to dispute the charge when I get home.
Although even after it was done, I did pay for the t-case rebuild.
Edward...such a nice boy, maybe but watch his people.
