Crazy EGR delete success?

Here were the steps I used to delete the egr from my truck. Keep in mind this is very low budget because I really don't care.

1. Removed egr tube, dpfe sensor and egr valve.

2. Cut the egr tube and took off the threaded nut that connects to the exhaust.

3. Put a spare bolt inside of the threaded nut and tightened it to the exhaust manifold. Seriously no leaks or anything.

4. Plugged up the egr valve vacuum line with duck tape.

5. Took a large cap from a marker and shoved it into the hole of the intake manifold where the egr valve connects. Seriously no leaks but I plan on getting a block off plate from a 2.9.

6. After running with a check engine light on for one tank of gas my mileage neither improved or decreased.

7. I spliced the dpfe sensor wire and ground to the tps return signal and ground. They both operate from a 5v reference voltage and a .9 to 5 volt return voltage.

8. I immediately noticed the engine pinging under load and reversed everything i did in step 7.

8. Racking my brain trying to think of a way to get proper, or close enough, voltage to the computer I had a stroke of genius. I took the map sensor off of a 93 camry engine I had from a previous vehicle. The sensor has a 5v reference voltage, signal, ground and vacuum line input.

9. I connected the egr vacuum line to the map. 5v reference, signal and ground from the dpfe to the camry map sensor.

10. At idle the sensor was giving 3.6 volts to the pcm after applying external vacuum to the sensor the lowest reading it gave was 1.4 volts.

11. Ran around the block, shut the truck off, ran around the block some more no cel.

NOW!!!

I was so excited that this is actually working I ran in to post of this here.

What is the collective estimate the success or failure of this mod? I don't want to hear about legality or the environment only thoughts to the mod itself.

I will keep honest updates to this post.

If I understand correctly, the EGR system on the old 2.9l engines did only 2 things: made the emissions somewhat cleaner, and caused a minimal improvement to efficiency when cruising. If something goes wrong with the system, it's quite a bit easier to remove it, than repair it.

I saw a circuit on the Hot Rod High website that fools the computer into believing that the EGR is still there and working. It uses 2 resistors as a voltage divider to provide the signal that the sensor would return to the computer, and a signal transistor to mimic the behavior of the selenoid. The parts might cost you $3 at Radio Shack.

I'd really recommend some hard blocks in the vacuum and EGR flow, more than just a marker cap and some duct tape. You shouldn't have to spend more than $15-20 total, and you'll have the peace of mind in knowing that your mod won't fail (and suck duct tape into the engine).

Spott

Ah I guess I should have been more specific.
The engine I'm doing this to is a 2.3 4 cyl.

I read that as well but in theroy using another sensor that returns the same readings will work as well.

Dont worry the cap and tape have been there for a month and are holding astrong haha.

Just drove to work no cel, no ping running smooth.

I think it a good way to work around a EGR problem that you had. But it wouldn't work for me or anyone who lives in California or New York.
