looking to make my 86 ford ranger into a crawler but am not sure where to begin. i put 410s as gearing in my truck, i also heard i need to switch into strait axles. but as far as suspension and lockers and everything else goes i would appreciate some help .

Get ARB Air Lockers, Detroit Lockers, or Powertrax Lock-Rite. Those three are some of the best out there. Depending on how hard core you want to wheel you might or might not need a straight axle up front. Get a set of C-clip eliminators so you c-clips won't break out on the trail. A standard 4"-6" suspension lift should be enough to get the job done!

an 86 crawler.. i would do:

dana 44 front 4.56's at least
9 inch rear
16 inch steel rims
good flexy coil springs
chevy 63" rear leafs
37" m/ts of km2's, toyo's, grabbers, interco's, so on..
detroits or arbs
dual t/cases!!

that is if you are wanting to get serious lol

the real question here is what tire size are you wanting? and how serious? what kind of trails? do you want TTB or SAS'ed?
even if you stay ttb you need to swap out the 7.5/d28 for the 8.8/d35

i am looking to get pretty serious. i dont know if anyone has heard of the rubicon but im looking to build a truck that can put it to shame

then do AT LEAST what i mentioned above..

and winch, armor, hijack, lights, skids, more armor, exo!,

oh and not a d44/9" combo but how about a d60 combo.. or a ff 14 bolt rear/ kingpin d60 front..

I ran the Rubicon in my BII with a 2" lift on 31"s with open diffs. It ain't that hard.:thefinger:
You really want to get into crawling go over to Pirate4x4 and get schooled. A bunch of real nice guys over there......why don't we have an evil smiley?

Yeah, I mean maybe Jester got lucky with open diffs, but Rubi is pretty intense, so do at the minimum of what 4.0 said. You definately need to be careful when attacking that trail. A roll bar or cage is a definate safety issue too. I had a friend who was nearly killed when his truck slid off a rock. But all in all, with careful planning, safe driving, and good equipment, you should be good to go.

Have you been on the 'Con lately? It's not the same trail it was years ago. Gatekeeper is gone and well.....this is happening

Sad...too bad, that was such a good run. Looks like my 2WD could tackle some of that.

It is, but we haven't completely lost yet. It's still open year round and the majority of the trail is still open and unmolested.

Keep fighting the good fight.

That's why I'm part of SAN. We CAN'T lose Rubicon or Charelaux Gap or any of the other major trails out there!

Or a smiley with an ax in its head and a machety in its belly if your sending a greenhorn to Pirate. Oh wait how about a smiley in a coffin too.:icon_thumby:

Aussie Lockers are good too, and at under $300 a pop, they are pretty reasonably priced.
