Cranks for awhile before starting

I have a 02 ranger with a 4.0L and it cranks for a long time before starting but onces started runs fine. Any ideas?

battery might be weak, try jumping it with another vehicle and see how fast it starts

Most times this is a problem with the fuel in the system bleeding back into the fuel tank when the engine is off. Try this: When inserting the key turn it to the RUN position so the fuel pump will engage. Wait 4 or 5 seconds and then twist the key to the START position. If it starts well then you have found the problem and also the way around the problem.

Where is the fuel pressure regulator

My 2003 4.0L 4WD has the same problem as the original post. I can turn the key to on (but not start) then turn off when I hear the fuel pump stop (about a second) then repeat a couple of times, then fire up with no problem. And there's no smell of fuel at all, so probably not a leaky injector. So the pressure/fuel is leaking back into the tank through the fuel pressure regulator, right?

My problems are that I don't know what the regulator looks like and I don't know where it's located. Seems that it should be somewhere between the fuel pump and the fuel rails but I'm not finding anything that would look like a fuel regulator. And I'm not seeing a regulator in any parts diagrams on the web, nor in parts searches at NAPA or elsewhere

Any advice?

Your '03 uses a returnless system. Start a separate thread describing your problem and you should get some good feedback.
