Couple questions i have

When converting a roller cam motor to carb, is there a reason i cant use a stock 1994 5.0 mustang distributor? If i just ran a coil like the one thats in my stock 3.0 1994 ranger would it work? Or is it necessary to get a different distributor?
Also can anybody post pictures of their modified a/c boxes

Also what distributor gear material do i need for a 1998 explorer 5.0 with a stock cam? I really dont want to mess this up after all the money thats been wasted so far

the 94 5.0 is a roller motor, the distributor will be fine...
 
Carbs don't use the computer what about the vacuum advance?

What would happen without vacuum advance? Could i get away with test firing the engine with this distributor and getting a new one later? Also what gear material do i need?

Becca here. Since you are going from computerized to non-computerized, there is a little information you need. With the distributor that you have now that you are wanting to use requires a computer to make it fire at the right time for the correct cylinder and it doesn't run off of vaccume, it also uses less fuel since the fuel delivery is electrical as well. Non-computerized uses vaccume to fire at the right time during acceleration, but the fuel delivery dumps more fuel and is mechanical which is why that it doesn't need a computer to run.

John-The pickup for both is in the distributor but with carb you have a separate modual (duraspark).
with the computer the modual is built in and controlled by the computer.
 
Steel gear, I used a rebuilt Duraspark dizzy for a 1985 Mustang IIRC. They were one of the few years to have a roller cam with DS.

My theory to keep them straight.
Steel = high tech = roller
Cast iron = low tech = flat tappet

And you can run MSD or whatever off the DS dizzy if you want.

Thank you all for the information i needed, i will probably be getting an hei but will look into the 1985 mustang distributor before i make my final choice

If your intake manifold will clear it, there are some really inexpensive GM HEI conversion distributors out there.
1) inexpensive
2) simple-no box needed to run it, not even an external coil. Just a power wire
3) high output-HEI does stand for High Energy Ignition
4) cheap to own because GM replacement parts are abundant

that would be cheaper than derraspark
 
You will need a spacer for your air cleaner , do not get the cheap ones they will melt with a back fire. get one that is a holly or one of the metel ones or go to the junk yard and get one from a chevy truck or van.
