Cost Breakdown

That's a great example. People think I'm nuts when I say I spent close to ten grand on the swap. That's how it happens!

No way am I totaling up my receipts!

You went over the $16K I spent,,, did you??? You have Over $5K in body and paint..

I'm going to ignore the initial cost of the truck. I'm not looking at all the reciepts, but this is close ballpark... canadian funds.

$200 - engine core
$800 - machine work
$1400 - trick flow heads
$80 - pushrods
$300 - KB pistons
$100 - Childs and Albert rings
$100 - bearings
$250 - rocker arms
$100 - valve covers
$100 - gasket set
$40 - water pump
$200 - air gap manifold
$300 - street avenger carb
$200 - new hardware throughout engine
$500 - MSD ignition (distributor, coil, wires, 6AL box)
$300 - swap headers
$100 - swap mounts
$300 - radiator and hoses
$100 - electric fan
$50 - oil filter relocator
$50 - air cleaner
$50 - transmission cooler
$100 - Lokar throttle assembly and cable
$400 - JW Ultra Bell bellhousing
$100 - SFI flexplate
$300 - JW torque converter
$800 - C4 tranny with manual valvebody
$80 - transmission pan
$200 - Lokar shifter
$1000 - guages
$300 - driveshaft
$300 - detroit locker
$200 - gears
$50 - rear end set up
$300 - custom axles and C-clip eliminators
$80 - trick flow cover
$200 - new brakes (only reused backing plates)
$100 - all new e-brake cables from cab to backing plates
$200 - 90/10 drag shocks in the front, 50/50 rear
$500 - Competition engineering slide-a-links
$1000 - front end rebuild (new calipers, rotors, ball joints, tie rods, bushings, new steering box)
$1000 - upholstery
$100 - Mooneyes steering wheel
$300 - fuel tank
$300 - fuel line and fittings
$30 - fuel filter
$100 - fuel pump
$750 - Mach1 rims and tires
$4500 into bodywork, so far. That's only the cab, and about half of the box.

And the total, to get me to a half complete truck : $18,110 :icon_twisted: Just wait until I get all the bodywork done, and have to start buying new bumpers, glass, lights, etc. But, I'm doing it because I want to, and the truck has sentimental value. It's wasn't an economic decision.

Here's the build thread.

Bump a good thread..

Dasfinc had a good list of his build also.

Additional items I had to purchase as I threw them out, or were damaged otherwise, Powersteering hose for 98+ 2wd V8 Explorers ($25) Radiator hoses for 2wd V-8 explorer (98+ this is important) ($30)

Due to the space, I opted for an Electric fan, and found that the best CFM for the buck was the fan out of a 3.8 92-95 Taurus. $22 and a junkyard trip later, I was in business. The shroud trimmed slightly covers the majority of the radiator, and I ran the fan off a switch on the 'low' side all summer and never had any heat issues despite only running a single fan. I will be getting a beefy relay so I can run on the high-side this season.

The wiring was a bit of a project, but in the end, the harnesses I had from the 96, and the harnesses I got with the 98 engine were enough to get everything working correctly.

For the ECU, The truck was able to run off the 96 ECU, but it ran pig rich, and got maybe 8mpg, Return style ECU, but returnless fuel system ($60 for injectors and rails off a 99+ Explorer). I quickly picked up an ECU off of a 2001 5.0 ($40 from my local yard), and a buddy sold me his Sniper Tuner (Delta Force tuning company I think its called now) for just $100. With the tuner, I disabled the PATS out of the 2001 ECU, changed to the 'canned premium fuel' setting, I raised the 3-4 shift point by 1000RPM (Which bumped it from 3500-4500 as the shift governor is in the ECU, not mechanical), and I raised the shift firmness to the middle 'setting' in the tuner *Firm*. This tuner could have also changed the fuel system settings from Return style to returnless as well, so I could have run the 96 ECU had I known this and saved myself the $40

At this point I needed to switch to the correct CPS Sensor and Spindle as they changed in 1999+ ($37 from Rock Auto), and I adjusted the wiring accordingly in the engine harness. With everything above, Last november the truck cut a 14.848 with a 2.08 60 foot on a pair of mustang cobra wheels (03-04's with some crappy 275 width Kuhmo's on them)

Current build totals:
Profit-
$250 for old engine and transmission
Costs-
$800 For the truck (98 Stepside/Std cab ranger with 2.5 4cyl/auto)
$450 for 'low mileage' 1998 5.0 and 2wd 4R70W from wrecked explorer (Jyard)
$50 + 3.73 rear end for Ranger 4.10/8.8/31 spline trak-loc rear end (Member of local webforum)
$100 Engine Mount Brackets (Local Machine Shop)
$80 Engine Mounts (Ford Parts Dealer)
$60 Water Pump (Autozone)
$30 Taurus Efan and switch/wiring to make it work (Jyard)
$40 2001 explorer 5.0 ECU to switch to the returnless fuel system. (Jyard)
$60 Fuel rails and injectors to switch to the returnless fuel system. (Explorer Forum)
$100 Sniper/DeltaForce Tuner (member of Local webform)
$40 2001 cam Syncro and CPS sensor.
$30 radiator Hoses
$40 Brand new Trans cooler (I could have re-used what I already had, but oh well)
$20 Clamps/heat shrink/solder/etc
$200 Brand new rear leaf springs (Because one of mine had cracked
$25 Power Steering hose
--------------------------
$1325 Total cost minus the truck

Wow :icon_thumby:

Well i suppose I could update as well.. now that my swap is complete here's what I know of off the top of my head. I do have a envelope of reciepts but I wont take the time to sort through it all.

Bronco II: $600.00
Swap stuff including trans: $650
Engine including rebuilding, machining and all odds and ends parts about: $850

truck avenger carb: $400
Bell housing J/W: $240
lokar kick down cable: $70
flex plate: $100
Torque converter: $100

Soo much more misc stuff: fluids, filters, fuel pump, regulator, etc.. the list would go forever.. I'm gonna guess a grand total of about $4,200

and it's still not painted lol

Anyone that ever asks this my answer is: "Cheap, fast or reliable picke two of the three". I have $5k in the engine alone. I lost count on the cost of stuff which is probably a good thing.

Matt

very true... I aimed for reliable on as much of a budget as possible... very difficult to do. I hate using old, worn, or even used parts at all, but that's one way to keep the cost down. Most critical parts I just bought brand new to avoid future failures.

Calculate your budget, then double it.

:icon_thumby: my shopping list grows every time i touch my truck. i'm just going with "look, a V8 in my low ranger" for now. don't plan on being fast with it. i'll buy another 5.0 and do a mild build when i have the money. so far though;

$600 donor Explorer with a blown trans and busted radiator, yanked the engine, FEAD, harness, computer, P/S hose, front sway bar, rear end with traction bars and sway bar, fuel pump and level sender assembly
$60 oil filter relocator
around $70 for all the gaskets i want to replace before the engine is in the truck
$30 upper and lower radiator hoses
$100 2wd 5.0 Ex transmission (chevy guy who was tired of holding it for a friend)
$60 engine mounts.
$70 for a like new dual core radiator
$40 water pump
$17 fuel line
$18 oil line

looking towards $1500 soon and all i have is an engine on the stand next to my truck. going to pick and pull this weekend before really digging into my truck to see if i can find anything else useful

1996 Expo 5.0 into an 02 Ranger:

Doner Expo $650
TM headers $700
Custom 2 piece driveshaft $500
Strada Shop mounting plates $70
New bearings/rings/gaskets/ignition $300
Odds and ends breakers yards parts $100
Oil pan, 3.27 gears, 8.8 rebuild kit, spring/shock mounts, muffler $300
Toss in a few bucks for fluids, refrigerant, etc $100
Sale of Expo parts -$300 (interior, pw motors, OHC, brackets, tire/rim etc)
Sale of Ranger 3.0 -$375 (3.0 with trans)
Sale of Ranger parts -$150 (a/c compressor, radiator, condenser)
Sale of scrap Expo -$275 (yea, after pulling the 5.0 complete, got all but $75 back!)

Call it $1800 with the TM headers, would have been just over a grand using the OEM Expo manifolds.

Not a bad way to renew a tired Ranger and build some fun into it.
