correct oil for older engines

Shit I use 15w40 Amsoil Synthetic Blend in my 1992 2.9. 155k miles too!

New lifters won't fix the problem that usually causes the ticking on a 2.9.

And the other problem that causes one or two to tick?
you'll likely make it worse...

The first problem is oil pressure

The second is the design of the lifter itself which traps air in the lifter

I would say your dad is absolutely correct. Mustang Monthly and the Turbo Diesel Resister magazines (that i know of) did an article on it. They said most of the newer oils took out, I think it was zinc and phosphorus to lower the emissions and make catalytic converters last longer. Newer engines apparently don't need it because they have roller lifters. The articles said if you don't have roller lifters and you use an oil without zinc or phosphorus (i think it's more the phosphorus) your cam will slowly wear down. and it also said getting a zinc/phosphorus substitute isn't as good as an oil that comes with it.

newer oil offers better protection. MOA will make it last forever good choice.

there is also another BG additive that cleans the oil passages and will free the lifters up i forget the name.

i work in a shop that uses BG products and they have me sold, RESULTS don't lie

"quick clean" IIRC

and I +1 your endorsement of BG. fantastic products.

My 1989 4x4 2.9 ticked bad until I had the lower end of engine rebuilt ,oil pump, crankshaft, bearings etc. Now quieter than ever and runs better that it has since I have owned it.

How much would I be looking at to get my motor rebuilt?

Hard to say as mechanics and their prices are different . My cost was almost $1000.00 but $500.00 was labor. Engine was removed etc. But it cured my problems.Hope this helps
