Coronavirus

Our docks don't go anywhere... :icon_rofl:

The Flu isn't going any where, there will be more "spikes"/outbreaks that's just the way it works, always has, always will

But that being said I do think the reduced contact has slowed down the spread, but there will be more outbreaks

The "herd immunity" England considered and Sweden is trying didn't cause the massive up tick in cases that scientist predicted it would, but still early days for Sweden, their tourist season is in the summer not winter.

It does look like once you get it and then fight it off you are immune, the re-occurrence in some seems to be they didn't actually beat it the first time around, false negative test, so get symptoms back a few days to a week later, and then they are clear once symptoms are gone again
So the ones that are getting it now, with mild symptoms, will not be able to spread it as things get more relaxed so way safer to be out and about when virus can't spread in 100% of the population
I think about 40% of the adult population gets an annual Flu shot and that really slows down the spread of the Flu
So the higher the percentage of "the herd" that can't spread a disease the better, I know DUH

But that's the reasoning for Sweden's decision and why getting our business's back open slowly is not as risky as you may think
In 2017-2018 CDC estimated 61,000 Flu associated deaths in the US, there were closer to 80,000 deaths, worst in last 40 years, this year may eclipse that, at 23,000 now, but I think thats JUST Covid-19, not regular Flu?
So people will still die from the Flu regardless of social distancing, the point of that is to spread out the infections so everyone could get best health care available, there are finite resources for medical care where ever you live
So its never been about "stopping it", its about spreading it out over time
You WILL get covid-19, hopefully it will be mild
If you are older, like me, that is worrisome, but hopefully there will be a Flu shot coming around sooner than later

Exactly!

Additionally, it is more likely that a drug based treatment and/or vaccine will actually succeed given enough time for research. I agree we're unlikely to eliminate it completely but treatment may be much more successful in the near future. I think the vast majority of seasonal flu deaths are from individuals who are unhealthy and/or do not get the seasonal flu vaccine.

My daughters best friend since grade school has it (tested positive). Likely got it while working in the hospital. She's my daughters maid of honor for her wedding that was suppose to happen in June. She's currently recovering at home.

Meanwhile.....

It's great to see Captain Crozier is still getting support from the public.

I went to the grocery store yesterday and saw quite a few people wearing masks, I didn't because the one my wife made me was too small. Several people had their masks on so that their noses were exposed- thoroughly defeating the mask's purpose. There was one old guy with a young man I took to be his son or grandson, they both had masks and gloves on. The kid's mask didn't cover his nose and the gloves were dirty leather work gloves. They were handling packages of meat and then putting them back when I saw them.(1) Why would anyone wear dirty work gloves to handle food?(2)Unless they somehow "sanitized" the gloves(unlikely looking at the discoloration on them), were they planning to throw the gloves away before getting into their car?
You can't fix stupid but you can be infected from contact with it.

I had a guy come in with gloves on yesterday, they were old yellow felt chore gloves. He mentioned he hadn't been feeling well (and his wife is a receptionist at the local hospital's ER) so of course I thanked him for coming in by hurriedly getting him his parts and out of my parts room ASAP, throwing the boxes he brought in in the incinerator and lysoling the counter and doorknobs copiously.

Government Logic

The Rules:
Basically, you can't leave the house for any reason, but if you have to, then you can.
Masks are useless, but maybe you have to wear one, it can save you, it is useless, but maybe it is mandatory as well.
Stores are closed, except those that are open.
You should not go to hospitals unless you have to go there.
Everyone needs to stay HOME, but it's important to GO OUT.
There is no shortage of groceries in the supermarket, but there are many things missing when you go there in the evening, but not in the morning. Sometimes.
The virus has no effect on children except those it affects.
Animals are not affected, but there is still a cat that tested positive in Belgium in February when no one had been tested, plus a few tigers here and there…
Every disturbing article or disturbing interview starts with " I don't want to trigger panic, but…"
The virus remains active on different surfaces for two hours, no, four, no, six, no, we didn't say hours, maybe days? But it takes a damp environment. Oh no, not necessarily.

Don't shoot the messenger...

But the news this morning says they are still investigating the origin of this virus. Seems some still believe it was developed in a Wuhan lab and China won't disclose what they know about it.

They may have their version of Dirtman in Wuhan...if so it likely originated in his furnace. We know OUR Dirtman keeps his furnace clean, but who knows what's growing in the Chinese furnaces.
Remember...THE CURVE, THE CURVE, THE PEAK, THE PEAK.
The govt keeps saying we've hit the peak, and we're flattening the curve, BUT, more citizens are dying each day than the day before.

Well. Correlation does not equal causation, but, seems like someone is getting ready for the entire planet to be pissed off at them...
