Coronavirus

@MikeG ...

I can’t take anything you say seriously just because you keep calling it cooties. 1.6 million people haven’t died from cooties.

I love this kind of comparison, it shows EXACTLY why variables need to be controlled when studying complex issues.

Remember what the CDC has been telling us about risk factors / comorbidity?

The prevalence of obesity in the U.S. was 42.4% in 2017~2018 (source: CDC) Almost HALF of us are obese!!!!!!

In Japan, 2.2% for men and 3.5% for women among Japanese adults aged
20 years or older (source: 2000 National Nutrition Survey conducted in Japan)

34.1 million adults aged 18 years or older—or 13.0% of all US adults—had diabetes (source: CDC)

Among adults, 12.1% had diabetes; 16.3% for men and 9.3% for women (source: nippon.com, quoting Japanese ministry of health).

Heart disease in the U.S: About 18.2 million adults age 20 and older have CAD (about 6.7%) source: CDC

Japan has the lowest coronary heart disease (CHD) mortality rate in the world [1]. - source, international journal of cardiology
49,273 deaths in 2012 in a population of 79,457,000 adults, vs. over half a million in the U.S. with a population of about 330 million.

CLEARLY..... wearing a mask in public, not only protects against the cootie apocalypse, but also obesity, heart disease, diabetes.... et al....

Or, in other words - non sequitur (Latin for "it does not follow")

Some version of "if it just saves one life" has been used as an emotional ploy to surrender rights, in countless instances, across the ages. Pretty poor argument!!!!

If I could find a randomized, controlled trial (much less double-blind, placebo controlled) where it showed that wearing a mask had a demonstrable effect on lowering the rate of transmission of ANYTHING, I'd be all over it. Believe me I've been scouring the internet looking for such.

(y):ROFLMAO: good one

Just hoping you, or anyone else, doesn't actually think this way

Doesn't matter what you call it. Any 'name' is just made up. Language is a flexible thing, ya know. Yes I know people are dying from it, my parents are dealing with it right now, and they aren't exactly spring chickens. What I call it doesn't affect the outcome.

We're all gonna die someday, pick something. "If it saves one life" - we can get rid of meat, alcohol, tobacco, sugar, cars, firearms, pills, narcotics, you name it.....

We could all live a LOT longer, by getting rid of quite a few things, put everyone on a vegan calorie-restricted diet, etc. Just wouldn't be much fun, would it? Think about that for a bit.

You mean NO BACON !!!!!:icon_surprised:

I've been wearing a mask in stores, etc for a while. I tested negative and don't interact with many people but it might make the people who have to work feel more comfortable if they see others with face coverings and it isn't difficult for me to do. The mask might help control the virus spread a little, too and the worst thing it does is fog my glasses. My nose stays warmer with a mask on, too. It doesn't hurt, doesn't cost much, and doesn't take much effort to be considerate of others feelings. The mask might actually improve my looks...

Actually, it does. It’s you making light of a serious situation. It’s you turning it into a joke. We’re having an adult conversation, cooties is a kids word. Come join us adults.

My wife and I just got our results back from our Covid tests....both negative....YEA.

Limited life can continue.

update on the Mcribs.
judging by the smell of things they definitely killed something. :icon_rofl:

Next time just ask for one that's uncooked...
It will look like this, and you can eat it like a popsicle....absolutely no smell !

And you thought the McRib couldn’t get any worse... Grumpaw brings you the McRibsickle. :bad:

Did you think "the cure" would taste good?

If it tastes bad its medicine, if it tastes good it ain't

I'm gonna call it "the virus that shall not be named....."

Yeah I get that language means different things to different people. But, in the end, if you strip off the emotion, then the end result is the same. I guess most people can't do that.

Example: "We saved a life!" (sounds heroic)
vs. "We postponed death!" (sounds morbid)

But they both mean the same, we all shuttle off this mortal coil, at some point..... (see, I can be poetic, too).

So I got to thinking about, what does all this pandemic mean, vs. stuff we die from anyway. And we all will (probably a news flash to some folks).

Found this web site. They claim to get numbers from CDC:

I put their data in slightly different format. Deaths by age group, "the virus that shall not be named" vs. "everything else."

Looks like, "if it only saves one life...." needs to focus on the other 90-98% of stuff that kills us. Even in the 85 plus group, only around 10% of the deaths were from "you know what." And lets face it, when you're 85, a paper cut from opening the mail might be what does you in.

Granted we don't have 100% of the population exposed yet, but I be we're about a third of the way there. And the doctors are figuring out how to kill fewer of their patients, as we go along.

Food for thought......

The "stuff that kills us anyway", is still killing us, the Covid virus just adds more to that daily number

Yes, if you can pull someone from a burning building it is heroic, "save just one life"
If you can wear a mask and "maybe" accomplish the same thing, that's also heroic, but without the "credit" someone might get from pulling someone from a burning building
I don't care about the credit, just the saving of a life, so I will wear a mask

My 90 year old aunt has been in a nursing home for a while. She contracted Covid so she was sent out to a hospital. She's finally back at the nursing home.

She doesn't want to eat or drink now. We know at this point she's going to eventually die. Not from Covid, but simply because her body is worn out, and she's simply slipping away.

She will most likely get labeled as dying from Covid.
