You are exactly right. The waiting period is for long term effects. The counter side of that, we have no idea of the long term effects of the coronavirus itself. People who have had it with little or no symptoms could develop dangerous conditions years from now. To make that point from this very thread, shingles is a condition caused by the chicken pox virus that takes years or decades to appear. Who knows what weird illness people could develop from covid down the line. Just because you've had it and survived does not mean you are safe from its future effects.

It should also be noted, the drug companies did not willingly skip the waiting period for the vaccine. They didn't violate the law or procedures in any way. The U.S government suspended the waiting period to speed up the approval process. The government rushed through the red tape, the drug companies did not rush through the science.

Yeah, and if people are willing to try it out before everything is known that's something I totally support. Just so long as they are accurately informed about what they're getting and it's completely voluntary.

Exactly. It needs to be voluntary.

And to Dirtman's example above - shingles is painful (had a friend who had it and described it as such) but NOT lethal. So, just because you got chicken pox, and may be at risk of shingles down the road, doesn't mean you'll die from it. Inconvenient, and uncomfortable - sure.

But humans have lived with chicken pox (and shingles) for who knows how many centuries. There needs to be a risk assessment / benefit assessment done.

If the people who made the vaccine really were altruistic, they'd measure whether or not people who had the vaccine were less contagious, than those who do not get the vaccine. They don't (it's in the reports, just have to dig deep). Right now the 'success' of the vaccine is being ballyhooed because ..... symptoms are lessened. That's it. Symptoms, with no measure of whether or not the rate of transmission is lessened. Yeah logically maybe it should be.... but did anyone measure it? We give people grief for posting symptoms on here, without codes being read (ie. guessing). But, vaccine being introduced with 'guessing' involved.... OK sure....

At a minimum, if they don't test all the volunteers for antibodies BEFORE they get the vaccine, then they don't know if it 'works.' Think about it......

To be fair for most of humanity’s existence shingles didn’t really matter. Humans didn’t live long enough to get them or they were dying of something else anyway.

My wife was in her 20’s when she had shingles, she was fighting leukemia at the time and her immune system was not in great shape, she does not recommend. 100 years ago with leukemia... shingles would be a 30-06 hole in the bottom of the sinking Titanic.

I won't take the vaccine unless it's at gun point. But then, I've never had a flu shot. And I'm 59. I work out every day, at right. Don't take any medicine for anything. Not starting now. Haven't had a cold or flu in years. Haven't even had a case of the sniffles this year.

To each his own. I get vaccinated mostly to protect the ones I love - have some really health compromised folks in the family and I'd rather not be the one that get's them sick.

This is fine, but not everyone is that lucky, and it is luck, make no mistake about it

You can live a healthy lifestyle and do all the right things and still die from a disease
And you can do all the wrong things and live a long and healthy life<<< I am hoping for this one, lol

Eating right and exercise can help but its not a guarantee of a positive outcome

And yes I have noticed that as well, since the mask wearing started and the social distancing most people I know and myself have noticed a real drop in "the sniffles" this fall

And that's a good thing. I live alone. Don't have any relatives left alive but my younger sister and brother. My brother lives too far away, my sister has too damn many cats. So I rarely see either of them. But I do work as a sheet metal mechanic on an Air Force Base. I have a feeling it may end up being mandatory for everyone on there to get the vaccine. At least by the time it gets to be that way, a lot of others will have already had it, and any side affects should be none.
