Guys I have a 97 Ranger with the 2.3...

I was wondering if anyone can describe the operation of the coil packs.. I'm basically wondering.- Do both coils run all the time, or does one coil shut off during certain driving conditions? (like on the older Nissan 720 pickups)..
If so, what conditions does the coil turn off? and which one?..
Any information or direction would help.

Thanks,

Friiy

I have a '94 2.3 on which a coil pack went out back in March. It spit and sputtered in all conditions, although it seemed to level out at really high RPMs. (You could still tell it was missing.)
There is also nothing in the schematics that would indicate a condition for the coil pack to cut out, but all I have is the Haynes manual, and there is A LOT going on in the PCM that is not detailed.

I only have a rudimentary understanding of how the coil packs work (stepping up voltage) so I will defer to someone who knows more.

the passenger side is the only one used during cranking, that's the only time I know of that one is turned off over the other

Apparently the secondary coil pack shuts off when the RPMs drop below 750(?). Not sure how this is supposed to help since it would seem that more spark would equal more power. Anyway, this coincides with the A/C relay powering down as well at the given RPM threshold, assuming the A/C is on and working at any rate (gotta love Ford and their ingenious spring locks right??).
