well i have a 1993 ford ranger 2.3 5 speed i scanned for codes had a few only one i can’t work out is code 542 i looked and checked all my groun. so far what i have read on 542 the ecu ground truck runs and drives low idle lose of power truck has 4.10 gears under load really slow take off as truck drive power slowly come up note this truck has rolled over went to 999999k then started back at 0 so that would be 1 million 32265 miles all the drive train has be rebuilt. never had to do any kind of wiring fix on this truck befor running out of places to look to get code 542 off

Howdy and welcome to TRS~!

The codes can all be found on this site at the following location:

It appears you read the code for what it is...bad ground or fuel pump always on...

I would have to assume from your assessment of the vehicle under load that it is still starting and running fine.

The DTS code542 can mean a bad ground or it can also mean a bad relay or the pump is failing because it is running more than it normally needs to supply the pressure to run the engine.

You can try doing a volume test on the pump to see if it is up to spec. Not sure what that is (exactly) to be honest but I understand the pumps are able to move so much fuel in a specified time...so you would need to research that aspect and test. I've had pumps that run longer and longer as they lose the ability to maintain pressure. It happens quite a bit but usually you get more pronounced symptoms like bunny hopping down the road due to fuel starvation.

Does the engine ever buck or is it just sluggish?

fuel pump is new it’s a 255 i had it seating around in new box this was befor i scan for codes check engine light come on for ignition box going bad. old fuel pump i thought it was going bad scanning the truck how i found code 542 never had check engine light on in the 4 years i had the truck and the fuel pump relay is new

Ok, many have had new pumps fail but it would be good to test it. Not sure what else it could be but I'm sure someone else can expand on it if they've had the same codes.

the pump that was in this truck now was new in box used it in the mustang with 6 psi from a paxton sc 93 took pump out only because i when with bigger fuel system on mustang

OK...is the exhaust system new also?

Did you test fuel pressure recently? It should be 40 PSI for a 1993. If it is then you can look elsewhere for possible performance issues...like the belt has skipped a tooth.

If the engine has low power from takeoff with 4:10 gears and a fairly recent rebuild then it's got to be setup/exhaust/or fuel pressure/supply.

Is it a M5OD transmission or automatic?
