Hello,

I tried looking through the posts and searched but did not really find what I was looking for so I thought I'd post.

I have a '91 Ranger XLT 4x4 4.0L with the M50D 5 sp. manual transmission and about 145,000 miles on it. I am in the process of rebuilding the trans and was wondering whether I should replace the clutch slave cylinder while I'm in there? I've owned the truck for about a year and I have not had any issues with the slave cylinder. It worked fine and did not leak. I bought the truck used and I know it is not the original engine or transmission so it has been worked on. I'm leaning on replacing it.

Just wondering if anyone had any experience with the store bought parts vs. OEM?

Thanks in advance for any insight.

well,if it was me i would replace it along with a clutch kit since you will have the tranny out anyway, and save the parts you replace if they are still operational.i have alot of spare used parts for my truck, but thats just what i would do.also considering it is a 91',and check your fy wheel and pressure plate to see if they need turning or replacing

I don't think the slave costs that much and it will save you the hassle of doing it later when it has to be done. If you have the money you can replace the clutch, all depends on how yours looks right now. I replaced my slave cylinder at 160k and the clutch looked fine, so I left it alone.

The clutch cover is good. I will replace the clutch disk and resurface the flywheel. Will need a new release bearing anyway so, now that I had time to think about it I'm sitting on the fence for what, 30 bucks?

New slave cylinder it is. Thanks for the reply.

Regards,
Gary

Yeah. I will be replaceing the clutch disk and release bearing. The bearing alone is about $30 and the slave cylinder is $60 and includes a new bearing so, pretty much a no brain-er.

Thanks for the input.

make sure you have an alignment tool or something to get the clutch centered when installing,or your pilot bearing in the center of your flywheel will not last long,i made that mistake my first clutch replacement,if you buy a clutch kit it should come with it,also you might want to replace the pilot bearing while your at it anyway, just some friendly advice
