So I, uh kinda sorta, uh broke my clutch. Yeah, I broke my clutch. I was going to let it go until I was taking things apart anyway, but today it just wouldn't work. If I started it in N it wouldn't go into gear, if I started it in gear it wouldn't stop.

Anyway, I have a SOHC swap in the works. All the clutch kits I see go from 93 or 94 to 2000, and 2000 up. I have double checked, all the part numbers are different.

I am wanting to know, first hand experience if possible, are there any clutches out there that work with both versions of the 4.0. I would like to get my truck back on the road, but if I can buy one clutch and use it on the next engine, that would be preferable to buying one, using it for a year at most, and then have to replace it again.

Also, I am looking into heavy duty towing units. I think I broke this one by overloading the truck. Any leads on good HD units would be appreciated.

Yes, this is somewhat urgent. I am ready to move to the next stage of my restoration but it requires getting the black truck out of the garage. I found all this today when I went to move the truck, which instead of being back on the road is now still in the garage without a transmission.

Have a read here: http://www.therangerstation.com/Magazine/January2011/M5OD-R1HD_swap.htm

R1 to R1HD swap
Only difference seems to be the slave/master hoses are different sizes, so different part numbers.
But if you are keeping the old master then you can use the R1 slave with the R1HD and SOHC

OHV and SOHC have different size clutch discs, but.................

read post #11 and #12 here: https://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=248643

You can use an SOHC clutch set, pressure plate and disc, in an OHV flywheel, so when you do the swap it will come off the OHV and bolt to the SOHC
Some drilling required on OHV flywheel, maybe

Thanks Ron. I might have run across all that on my own eventually, but I am running on about 3 hours of sleep right now.

I am actually not even going to the HD trans, since that one bell bolt and no where to hook up my speedo are the only differences. And I am not too worried about the missing bolt since I found out today I have only had two in there for who knows how long. That means all existing hydraulics are going to be used.

It sounds like that one clutch would in fact fit my current application and then transfer over to the SOHC engine with no issues.

Yes, the '97-'00 explorer 4.0l clutch(9") was OHV or SOHC compatible.

But I think that was because they used the OHV flywheel on both.

The '01's got a different flywheel for 10" clutch with different pressure plate bolt pattern.

4.0l OHV or SOHC use the same crank, '97 and up, 8 bolt flywheel

4.3 Stroker kits can be used with either OHV or SOHC, same crank

So you should be able to swap OHV flywheel to SOHC with the new clutch parts

The problem with doing that is I am currently running an early crack. The early and middle 4.0s, up to 97 had a 6 bolt fly wheel, my engine is a 92. The 98+ had an 8 bolt flyhweel.

However, what I have found now that I got a little more sleep, is this:

Most clutch kits for the Ranger list as fitting up to 2000. The Ranger and Explorer OHV engines appear to use the same flyhweel in the 98-2000 range. The clutch kit that I was looking at lists only for an Explorer, not a Ranger (not sure what difference that makes) but has the same part number showing up for the OHV and OHC engines. The dimensions of the clutch disc also match the earlier OHV kits.

It will be here Thursday, and if it doesn't work I will run down to the store I am working at these days and grab one of the store-brand kits since I can get things about 45% off right now.
