Clunkers for cash

Hey we would all like to see what they looked like. Hope it doesn't much to get them back in shape.
Dave

there is a misconception of the engines from the C.A.R.S program being completely filled with some magic compund. in reality, it is liquid sodium silicate. and the entire engine is not filled up, its usually about a quart pumped into the oil filler which runs down to the pan, this is a solution kind of like saltwater, it makes the metal "sweat" which drives any residual oil from the bearings and the engine locks up. the heads will be fine if you disassemble them, get all that crap off the springs and the valves and all that, if there even is any, normally that stuff doesnt make it much further than the oil filter

I bought two sets of heads from C4C Explorers. One set was GT40's and the others were GTP's. I had one set redone and they were fine, guides were in good shape and I replaced the springs, retainers & keepers as they went on a performance build. The other set I took apart myself and the springs & rockers were covered in that stuff so I tossed them out. The valve guides seals are the positive seal type and so the guides were in great shape. The edge of the heads were full of that sh*t and took me about two hours each head to clean them out. I will buy more of these heads as the two I already had were both usable and I get them for 40 bucks a set.

So called clunkers

This is the same crap that resulted in the hot rod magazine crusher camaro project from years ago, except they figured out a way to make you, me and everyone that pays taxes finance this one instead of trading emissions credit to oil refining companies for a large number of junk cars. Hot rod magazine paid $800 for an immaculate LA based 6 cylinder 1968 camaro when the last one went down, from the line a Chevron if I recall correctly. I think it had a 572 in it the last time it made the rounds, one I'd be pround to have in my garage but I don't make enough money to buy it even if it was for sale.

We live in the UP of Michigan and believe you me with the iron moss it's pretty easy to find enough '84+ vehicles to make scrap out of, and a couple of our rangers would be among them if we were in the market for a new car or truck. Hell we have one going for scrap after taking a few more parts next week!

My understanding is that it's really just glass beads, and that the motors shut down RIGHT NOW. I would think this is primarily the result of crankshaft and rod main seziure, but I could be mistaken. I would question the urban myth about heads being wrecked as well, but you can pretty much put the valve train in a heap, because it's going to get abrasive crap before the engine stops too.

IMHO, if there are ways to get heads off some of these motors that are desirable it's worth a try. There is so much SBF stuff out there I can't imagine not being able to use the stuff if it makes any sense... But it's kind of like having a third click on the fire selector of your AR-15 that isn't necessarily marked - you better be damn careful.

They can keep running for about 10-15 minutes, sometimes up to 20.

The dealership my brother works at had a 302 in a F-150, probably the last 5 minutes it was running it was slowly speeding up and slowing down over and over until it just really slowly came down to a stop... so smooth the engine didn't even buck as came to a stop.

Personally if I was building an engine I don't think I would want a piece off of the inside of the inside of a CFC engine. By the time you got them usuable again you could have just bought a set ready to go without the risk.

Im still waiting to see some pictures of the heads.

went to the local JY's this weekend.... HOLY CRAP the amount of c4c cars there!! And....there were a few spray painted engines missing heads..... couldn't pull a dipstick let me tell ya!

Melting point 1088 °C (anhydrous), the kind use with the water mixture.

South Carolina

Got some seats out of a Mountaineer today for $75, and the overhead console for $20

didnt have the proper tools to get the center console, not sure how it would fit in my 91 anyway, at best I would lose access to the ashtray and lighter

guy isnt sure if he is allowed to sell engine parts, as far as I can tell its ok, the only requirement is the dealerships were supposed to disable the engine before sending it to the junkyard

Here are the seats

Clunkers for cash

Yeah they say Mountaineer but I dont care, beats the hell out of the cloth 60/40 bench seat

You can't get anything from a salvage yard here in Missouri that cheap. I guarantee I would pay twice that for those seats and that's if I pull them myself. I'm looking for a rear sliding window for my truck. The cheapest one I found was $100 and I have to pull it.
