Hi
86 RANGER 2.9LT Super Cab manual transmission 4X4

Inside of gas tank has got lottsa rust and sludge from 6 year old gas, and loose chunks of rust sloshing around in there.

The only thing I can do here is rinse it out the best I can with the garden hose, then drain it out, then put in a quart of methyl alcohol then drain that out.

Will that be good enuff or not??

consider replacing the tank...

if that is not feasible, I would use a good quality solvent like they use in a parts cleaner tank (instead of the garden hose, that will probably be fairly ineffective) let the solvent sit for a few days and scrub as much as you can with a long handle brush and dump the solvent out into a bucket, filter the crud out and put the solvent back in again and repeat.

Do this until you are not getting any chunks of crud anymore, and then put some clean solvent in and try again. once you are reasonably sure all the crud is out, check to make sure you dont' have any pin hole leaks, let the tank dry out and rinse it with a quart of gasoline, then reinstall and fill half way up.

Run that through the engine and change the fuel filter (I am assuming you have already flushed the lines...If not, flush the fuel lines first) Run another tank through and if the truck is running good, you are probably good to go.

I heard there was some kinda goop you could put inside gas tank that would make a new lining and seal it, do you know what it is??

Hows about Marine Epoxy, is that gas proof??

Saw in tv a new product that seals it you just put it in and slosh it around....

Looks like those things are gonna cost 100 bucks or more.

I think Ill rinse it out with garden hose, then if thats not good enuff fill it full of water with a pint of dish soap and a box of washing soda, build a fire under the tank and boil it all day.

Can you say "B O O M"?

I don't care how old a tank appears to be, or how well you "cleaned" it out. Most tanks have baffles built into them, and they can hold vapors--which can still be very dangerous!

Order in a new tank and have it done with if you are concerned.

Can you say "D U H"?
If its full of water it cannot go boom.

If I could afford to order in a new tank then I would just order in a new truck.

Ever seen a gas tank explode? I have! Silly shade tree know-it-all idiots felt they filled the tank with enough water. Nice pocket full of vapor and a welder was all it took to blow the tank apart and the rear part of their jeep they where trying to patch up.

Sorry for trying to prevent an accident--Go right ahead, clearly a former retired firefighter doesn't know what he's talking about.

No Ive never seen a gas tank explode cuz Im a trained professional in these matters.
Im not gonna fill it with enuff water, Im gonna fill it full of water.

I wont be doing any welding, if I was welding I would use steam.

Im not a know-it-all idiot.

When I was a kid back on the farm when they would weld up a gas tank they always filled full of gas. Personally to fix holes in metal tanks I use JB Weld and a piece of beer can. There is a product called Kreem that will solve your problem. You can usually find it at places that sell stuff for motorcycles.. One bottle was enough to do a 20 gal tank.

When you was a kid back on the farm "they" were lucky they didnt get blown to smithereenze.
I have used JB weld, the last leaks I fixed with marine epoxy and fiberglass tape, then I coated the whole tank with "instant patch" roofing tar.

kreem sounds ok till you find out how clean you havta get the tank first.

Rinse it with the hose, put some gravel or chain in there shake it around real good, rinse, repeat. Don't use those tank coatings, given ever had good luck with that except with motorcycle tanks

Ya, I took a good look, most of the stuff Im worried about is on the bottom, Ive got some small cross links from car tire chains I can throw in there shake it up.

Maybe turn tank upside down and bang on the bottom with a wooden hammer to brake loose the flaky bits??
