Clean inside of gas tank??

Muriatic acid is a 10 % solution of hydrochloric acid. You can get it at a hardware store or wherever cement and mortar is sold.

The stuff we have says it's a 32% solution and they still called it muriatic acid. I've been reading of people using it (unsure which concentration) to clean concrete and aluminum, but at least with a hydrochloric acid based drain opener I know I could dissolve small chips of ally and concrete in a jar in a few minutes. I really don't like using the stuff. To be properly protected you need to be wearing enough gear to look like the villain from a horror movie, otherwise you leave yourself open to burns, blindness, respiratory damage, etc.

Muriatic acid is just an old term for hydrochloric acid, doesn't really imply a specific concentration. Useful AND dangerous. One of my favorite combinations.

For rust removal do not dilute muriatic. Just use it straight out of the bottle.

Yes Yes!!
All my life I have been searching for a place to buy muriatic acid and all I got was a run around, I went to lumber yard and got a gallon of muriatic acid for 12 bucks. They did not know nor did the bottle say what concentration the acid was.

To safely weld on a gas tank is very simple, start a truck, run a hose off the exhaust into the gas tank to be welded, wait a few and start welding.

No oxygen, the tank if full of C02 with a constant draft, no explosion.
DEAD WRONG!!
Carbon monoxide, CO, is flammable, add one more O you get CO2 and an explosion, those who used exhaust to weld gas tank and lived are counted among the lucky ones.

Ah yes, Useful AND dangerous my favorite plaything.

Yes works good strait, but bottle said for rust use 1 part acid 4 parts water, I used strait at first but needed more so I put some water and it worked fine.

All I have done so far is clean rust off the part that locks into top of tank that holds fuel output/return/sending unit. I soaked it and used tooth brush, that got rid of most of the rust. Then I washed it with water and found that wire brush took off more, then pocket knife removed more, then it was 90% free of rust. Washed it off with water, naturally rust started to form out of the air, so I mixed 50/50 gas and motor oil and treated it with that to impede rust formation. This part that I saved costs more than 100 bucks in town.

Next Im gonna steam clean and pressure wash rusty gas tank, I have nearly a gallon of acid left so use that after too.

If I get Ranger running rite then I can consider buying new gas tank etc, but till then it would be throwing good money after bad.

Thanks for input youse guys :icon_bounceblue:

Carbon Monoxide and Carbon dioxide CO and CO2 respectively, are both by products of combustion and are not flammable. why? because they have already been burned :) The issue of using exhaust to push out the air will work, but you have to be one hundred percent sure that all of the free O2 molecules are out of the tank. with baffles and how the tank is shaped, you might get a pocket of air that does not get flushed out of the tank and one good spark: Kaboom! but if you can get the air replaced with the exhaust or even get a bottle of CO2 or any other nonflammable gas and drive the air/ O2 out of the tank, you should be good to go.

They also use CO2 in fire extinguishers. so I would safely say that it is non flammable :p

be sure to give the tank a good rinse after the acid bath. And post pictures of this project truck for all of us picture junkies :)
