my bud wants me to fix the lead on his grand cherokee v8. leaks out of cover and pinion seal. i also need to know if its a d44 rear. and can i just replace one of the pinion seals and is it the same as the 8.8 seal??

no its not the same as the 8.8 seal.

pull rear d-shaft, take nut off yoke, hammer yoke off, dig seal out with flathead screwdriver/needle nose pliers. oil and hammer new seal in. take cover off, scrap off gasket material off. Put bead of Right-Stuff around mating surface. Reinstall.

Heavy duty towing package usually means DANA44. Regularly it's a DANA35. I say usually because somehow my dad's Cherokee has the full (coolers, hitch, full wiring) tow pack and a 35.

Almost all GC's with V8's came with the D44 axle, two ways to verify, look on the webs of the housing next to the diff cover, you should see "44" on one of the corners, since you have to drop the cover anyways, rotate the ring gear around til you see the stampings, it'll be stamped dana 44 or dana 35
