Check this out for stupidity

Gear oil is specifically formulated to "Stick" to things.
If engine oil sticks to metal it makes it nearly impossible
for the oil ring to scrape it from the cylinder walls.

Now I'm curious, I almost want to try running an engine with gear oil and see if it smokes like a two-stroke due to the piston rings having a hard time wiping the cylinder wall. hmmmm, doubt it will happen thought....

I added a quart of oil to my Mustang ONLY to notice too late it was ATF- but at least I was smart enuff to change it right away

At the risk of being thought a little silly...
With mid-aged engines I sometimes throw in half a liter of ATF and then go for a 'warm up' drive before I do my oil change, ATF is a strong detergent as an oil . I doubt new engines would benefit from this, and you risk dislodging things that shouldn't be dislodged in older engines if you introduce detergents.

Almost makes me want to go out and buy a Subaru.

I would take my truck to the dealer for a oil change, than to trust a jockey at the local quick lube, I like people to change my oil, that actually CARES about the customer!

You can bring your truck to my place. Sure it maybe an government quickie lube joint. But I take pride in my work.

As for Candyman, shame on you. The customer is always right, even if they chew you out and you know its wrong. If they say to put 5w50 in a 5w20, just warn them about it and get the job done.

As for the idoit with the diff oil in an engine. I should personally kick him square in the nuts for involving Royal Purple products in such a dumb use.

I've seen engines (both a large 15-liter and a small 1-liter) with gear oil in them. Other than smelling odd and sludging up it's hard to spot the difference. They run just fine. Neither one used oil appreciably. But they did sludge up in a big hurry. The OP in that thread stated his oil light was flickering. It's likely the engine failed due to low lube rather than directly from wrong oil. I'll bet if he pulls the valve cover and oil pan he'll find most of his oil has turned into something resembling asphalt. Probably even plugged his pickup tube.

FWIW, engines can tolerate having the wrong oil up until the addatives break down from heat and contamination. I actually add ATF (1 qt or less, just to top off) to my crankcase a day before changing the oil to clean the motor out. As long as it's not in there long enough to break down, it's harmless.
