changing my 2.3 to a 2.2 diesel

now my 2.3 is carbed. now i want a turbo 2.3 for sure now! ive been reading and watching videos, thats what i want. i guess i might go with a manual afterall. we shall see about that though. now since mine is carbed i need to have fuel injected for the turbo. so it will do me best to just try and find a turbo coupe, huh?

that's a good lookin little truck you have. almost unbeleivable that the engine compartment is so ugly and rusty looking on such a cherry truck :)

thats really interesting. at least it is carbed though..that makes sense...no computers to worry about on that motor.

that is without a doubt the cleanest 1st generation ranger ive ever seen. im normally not a huge fan of slammed trucks but its a good look on such a clean truck...especially with the steelies!

you dont have to go fuel injected to run a turbo. search around on the internet for turboed small blocks and the like. it can be done. you'll want to replace the stock one barrel carb for sure :D

or alternatly you can still use a turbocoupe motor and run the fuel injection setup.

HAHAH yea i know. its all about to be clean :D

yea no computer. well which would you perfer? honest? turbocoupe? or turbo this one?

i think itd be easier modding this one, but would it be able to get about the sam hp as the turbocoupe? with forged pistons, and all that jazz?

if you put forged pistons in your motor, horsepower would be comparable to the turbocoupe motor. of coarse fuel injection will always make better power and better economy than a carb setup...but it will be close.

the choice is yours. both have their advantages :icon_thumby:

hmmm. ok well itd be easier to do it on the carbed cause no wiring. i know you say its easy and i could prolly figure it out, but ive just never done one.

now where would i go to buy my turbo, manifold, intake, intercooler, etc. hell idk even know what all i would need to do that. and id have to tap my block for the oil feed for the turbo right?

i would get a turbo and exhuast manifold from a turbocoupe. intake may have to be a custom deal depending if you decide to go pull-through or blow-through. most of the 2.3 swap guys are using volvo intercoolers due to their compactness. your block is already tapped for oil pressure, where the oil pressure sensor is located. just use a "T" fitting. you'll also need an oil return, usually installing a fitting in the oil pan is best.

ok. lost me lol

blow through?
pull through?

im guessing that these are the different ways that you can set up your turbo? push or pull the air?

so mines already tapped ok cool. now i know id need forged pistons. what size? what about a cam? roller rockers? now im not looking to run 10 seconds. and im not looking for 300 HP. itd be nice dont get me wrong! but i think 15PSI would be fun enough. more or less. where could i get a custom intake?

blow-through means your turbo is pushing air through the carb. pull-through means the turbo pulls air through the carb.

i couldnt tell you which setup works better because i dont know that much about turboing carbed engines.

turbocoupe forged pistons should fit in your motor. the turbocoupe exhaust manifold will also bolt on. the intake manifold is different because its fuel injected...it has no provisions for mounting a carb.

you can use your stock valve trane. upgrading it will help, but its not necissary.

for all the little details on tuning the 2.3, you should contact the member "Mutant Pony". hes TRS's foremost 2.3 guy and could tell you everything you need to know regarding specifics in cams, pistons, rods, etc, etc..

The W code on the trans means it has a C5 trans in it, it should be able to handle a turbo motor with no problem.

2WD & 4WD Bronco II

I seen a 84 2.3 with a C5 in 2wd ranger in a salvage yard also, the C3's more than likely came with the 2.0 engines.

exactly. 4wd rangers, and 2wd/4wd brinco II's. both the 2wd and 4wd bronco II's use a 4wd transmission. this is because the 2wd BII's use a "dummy" t-case...the 2wd rangers dont.

im not saying 2wd rangers never came with the C5...im just saying ive never seen a C5 with a 2wd tailhousing in an RBV.

ive also heard (mostly from the fullsize crowd) that the C5 is actually less reliable than the C4 (mostly related to the flakey centrifugal converter lock-up).
