I have a 2000 ford ranger 4 cyl manual trans. It runs real ruff and has a hard time getting past 55 MPH. Strong smell of gasoline when standing outside the truck during idle like it is running rich not fuel leak. CEL codes of P1506 and P0401.

The p1506 = idle air control valve over speed. You can try cleaning or replacing the valve.
P0401 = insufficient EGR flow. You can check to see if you EGR valve opens. The valve maybe sticking and can be cleaned or replaced or the valve may not be getting the vacuum to open it.

I had the P0401 code for awhile. replaced the EGR valve and gasket, cleaned the EGR tube, checked the passage at the exhaust manifold, replaced all the vac lines, installed a new EGR solenoid, and still had the code

Turns out that i had a chunk of carbon stuck in the EGR passage. Cleared it and it hasnt returned in several hundred miles.
