Hi guys just a general question about running a catch can, or oil separator for the breathers on a 4,0l OHV out of a Ranger.

I was just wondering what people's opinions on this were, and if anyone has done this before?

I haven't seen the need for a catch can on the Rat Why fix something that isn't broken? :D

The only time I have seen or heard of doing this was on offroad rig that had a really worn out engine...they would catch the oil from blow by and pour it back in the engine. I don't really see a reason to do it unless you're in that situation.

Some of the newer high performance engines have very efficient PVC systems that suck more than they probably should. I know they are popular on late model Challengers and Mustangs.

My brother's '11 would actually ping and throw a code when he got a tune because the oil vapor being sucked out of the crank case from the piston cooling jets didn't agree with the tune, Ford Racing told him to try a oil separator because the cars with piston cooling jets ('11's and early '12's) had problems with going lean (IIRC) and if it didn't work they would buy back the tuner. It worked perfect.

They are also popular for engines running boost.

Not sure where a OHV 4.0 fits into this. My well used 5.0 has always had a clean intake when I pull the carb off...

Dredging up an old discussion but I’m curious about this. Is there an aftermarket kit available to install a catch can?

Many universal ones.

If your 4.0 needs one you need a new 4.0 though.

Catch cans usually aren't really vehicle specific. You just stick it between the pvc valve and the intake manifold...

Like @85_Ranger4x4 said, you don't need one on a 4.0. The only ranger engines that can truly benefit from one is the 2.3 duratec and the new 2.3 ecoboost...

10-4. Thanks. For some reason the thread showed up when I was reading on my phone.

I was just curious. My 4.0 doesn't show a drop of use on the dipstick between changes. I'll just head back and resume my nap. (y)
