My credo
Give 'yer balls a tug. Fight me.
Photo from the engine side of the first converter on my 1988. Sounds like it has a small marble running around between the first and second.

Still good or scrap heap?

It looks fine to me. :dunno:

A piece could have broken off and be what's rattling but when they are bad they are pretty obviously gross and or melted.

The strata is intact. Can you see light through it? Based off what I see here, it should be good if you can see light through it. Can you see the other side and what it looks like?

As far as the sound, it could be that the honey comb matrix is broken in half and that is what you are hearing.

Thems still worth money even when bad just fyi. And not just steel scrap, the precious metals are worth some $$$.

Cannot see light through it, even with a 4000 lumen flashlight aimed into the other end. There is a slight bend to them, though.

My main concern was where it looks like it's peeled back from the housing and is warped out a bit.

The core is broke then. Did it feel like there was a restriction when driving? If not, you are probably ok for now but will eventually want to replace that at some point so you don't fill your muffler with broken catalyst bits.

Is that what the top part of the image is? Hard to tell from a pic down a pipe... I thought maybe that was just a weird camera angle?

Is this on or off the car?

To a degree. Trying to figure out if my dip I'm volumetric efficiency in my maps is due to an exhaust restriction or lifter issues. Checking both to be sure.

Pulled it off for that photo. The areas at the top and bottom are where it's pulled back, more at the top. Honeycomb in the center looks punched forward a half inch to an inch.

Off the car you should see some light... and with that weird peeled back thing I change my answer to it's bad. If it were a customers car and you just needed it to run I'd say send it. But if there's a problem before hand that made you think cats replace it. If it were my own I'd replace it regardless but I'm anal with my own stuff.

It looks to me like it started melting a little... that’s why it’s pulling away from the housing. Probably a bad tune for a little while... whoever tuned it didn’t know what they were doing. ??

Obviously he turned it with his mini squirting....

Oh yeah. I sorta figured I'd be messing my cats up. Doesn't really surprise me. Just finally had a chance to look at them.

But... But... But....
