Here's the deal. I am currently driving my 89 2.9L ranger around in Texas for what may end up being a 2+ year gig. The cat is plugged and needs replacement. I plan on registering the vehicle in Texas for now while I live/work here, so I think I'm okay for getting a reasonably priced 49-state cat. However, my long term plan is to move back to California. The truck is originally from California, so is there going to be an issue when it comes to the inspection after I get back?
Thanks for any help!

When it comes to Government it is "Better to beg forgiveness than to ask permission".
Just my opinion.

Your vehicle will have to pass emissions in Calif. when you move back, not sure an inspection would find the Cat issue, and hopefully it will pass.
But in any case you are talking 2+ years away, 1989 truck could have other issue by that time, so I would go for the less expensive Cat because it is Legal where you are now, so you are following the Law, if it comes up in Calif. that's your defense, "I was following the Law in Texas".

I kinda agree with Ron. I would buy the 49 stat cat and use it to get by for now. Then in two years, if at all possible, drop the plans to move back to California and go literally anywhere else.

Not for nuthin' but the " kalifornia emissions " boondoggle was settled in a class action lawsuit about 10 or 12 years ago. The " kalifornia emissions " was a sticker the dealerships put on the rad cowl. In reality, it was a simple entrance fee tax perpetrated by the state of kalifornia. OP if you replace your cat wit a " 49 " state cat you will be fine, no matter where you end up. I suggest as far from kalifornia as possible, no water don'cha know.

Military people pass cali emissions with out of state vehicals all the time would be no different than you in all actuality i found it easyer to pass in cali than indiana the sniffer test was easy to pass by clearing codes before test now indiana on the other hand is a obd2 check and all monitors have to run and be completed with no light or pending codes just rember for california the skechy smog places are the best
"just make sure you pay cash"
