I'm going to look at a 04 xlt 4d 6ft bed, needs cat and fuel pump, 100k miles, my question is, does it ha e 1 or cats, and what's the location?
Thanks in advance

Depends on if its 4cyl or V6 and if its Dual exhaust or single, could have 2, 3 or 4

4cyl will have 2 cats

V6 single exhaust will have 1 cat for each side on the "Y" pipe and then 1 cat on the main exhaust before muffler, 3 cats

Dual exhaust will have the 1 cat on each side near the engine then 1 cat on each pipe before the 2 mufflers, 4 cats

2004 is WAY to early for Cat issues, could have been engine issues that caused premature failure, so heads up
i.e. head gasket(cats burning coolant), valve issues(cats burning oil) or computer issues(rich running, cats over heated)

Ok he says it's single exhaust all cats were cut off, so there's 3 fxcking cats on it?

Well thats going to cost a fortune lol whole exhaust

Look for a 2001-2011 Ranger 4.0l or Mazda B4000 being sold as "Mechanics Special", i.e. bad engine, trans, body, ???
Buy it(assuming cats are there, lol) swap out your exhaust, then resell it as same "Mechanics Special"

Its against the law to sell used Cats, except for melting down, but you can sell a whole used vehicle

I might not even buy it, I looked up the kbb on, seems like a decent 3rd part value but I'm looking for something cheap for winter, it does seem like it has a lot of life left in it though

If you havent bought it, then use the cats as a bargaining device. Find the replacement cost and go from there.

He wanted 1200 offered 1k before I knew it was three cats, just figured it was the rear one

After the cats are fixed (include labor), what's it worth to you?

Double check on the number of cats. I’m pretty sure my 2011 only has two. One for each bank.

my '93 4.0 has 2 cats, both after the y pipe. they are bolt in. I think Rock auto has em, junk yard might too.
