Cash for clunkers giving me $4500.00 for my truck

we traded in my wife's dodge mini van for a 2010 Fusion. You talk about a nice car, this thing is sweet.

My inlaws traded in their junky Cherokee on a Fusion, nice car. MUCH nicer to ride in than the Cherokee. I never understood why they bought that stupid Cherokee in the first place. Mother in law loves not having to gas up every week.

Interesting. I had an S10 with a 383 stroker (LT1) and I got 9 mpg.:icon_confused:

I don't know why it got such lousy mileage. I should have stated that when my car was stock it got 26mpg highway. It is modded now, makes around 440bhp and still gets 20 on the highway but in town it gets around 14.

A guy in my Fbody car club has a 383 stroker in his Camaro and it only gets about 10mpg but it makes aorund 600 to the rear wheels.

I beat on it everywhere I drove it. :D It ran rich quite often. The guy who I got it from f**ked up something. I couldn't complain for $2000 though. He had that much in just the engine.

He probably didn't have a very good tune on the pcm. LT1s have to be tuned right or they will run pig rich no matter what. I have learned that from experience. I had to have mine tuned twice. first I used pcmsforless.com, and they got it to where my car would run, but not well. I had to take it to a guy that tunes LTx and LSx motors. It was a night and day difference.

I never had it tuned or anything. It had a nice lope to it though. Straight line performance was awesome.

Dont forget the cut-off stone washed shorts, def leppard half-shirt, and the cheesy tom selleck moustache.

And that one country song that goes...something like this..." Drive my (insert expletive here) 90mph (because it's fast like that...) down red rock road. With born to run blasting on the radio..."

i cant stand this whole cash for clunkers deal. what they're blowing motors and crushing stuff so you cant fix your old vehicle and your forced to buy a new one? those comunist bastards. it irritaes me that they are deciding whats a clunker by the vehicles fuel mileage. my truck at 194k puts out very clean exhaust, so clean i can put my head down to the tail pipe and it doesnt have much of a smell at all and doesnt burn my nose or anything. now they would consider my truck a clunker because it get 18mpg. but the average rice rocket fartin round town blowin black smoke cause the rings are fried from street racin is concidered environmentally friendly because it gets like 34 mpg. wheres the logic in that? also i wouldnt crush that tan ranger, if you even think bout it, come see me- ill give ya 50 bucks, 2 slaps across the face, heck ill even throw in a chainsaw!

I love people calling the government commies for trying to help instead of stepping back and watching. What about all those people that were 3-4k away from being able to afford a new ($9000) Kia and were forced to drive an unreilable POS. Sure there are people abusing the system, but that's the American way. As far as your communist statement, if this were a true communist activity, the government would FORCE you to turn in your car/truck and they would assign everyone the same type of can, all the same color, all the same features. But to my knowledge this is an option for people to turn in their old car/truck (if they want to) and to get a new car/truck (of their choosing). And by the way, CO2 (carbon dioxide) and CO (carbon monoxide) are colorless, odor-less gases. Maybe you've been smelling your tail pipe for too long there buddy.

Very well said... +1...

The government should step back and watch. It is not thier job to do this, nor bail out companies. Either way in the end we and out kids pay for this, where do you think this money comes from? The government does not make any money like a business, they tax it from us, which to an extent I do belive in, but I do believe the thing where the government is for the people by the people meaning they are out employees, they arent listening to a vast majority of us and are doing what they want when they want, would you be fired from you job for acting like this and spending your bosses money without permission?

That '86 looks great. I believe that color is called "Desert Tan." And I just noticed that white, early '80s Lincoln Continental Mark VI in the corner of the photo - is this someone's daily driver?!

Just for laughs (I haven't owned it for a year and would never let them destroy my truck) I looked up my '86 (2WD, 2.9 V-6, Automatic) to see if it was possible to trade it for a similar new truck. The Ranger is rated at 18, so 22 would get you $4,500, 21 would get you $3,500.

There are three trucks that get 21, the Ranger/B-series, the Colorado/Canyon, and the Tacoma, all with 4-cylinder/automatic. No V-6 engines qualified. So basically the government is telling me to settle for a 4-cylinder or move to a different type of vehicle. Like a compact pickup is such a bad thing! No thanks.

I hate the waste that goes along with this program. It goes against what I believe (i.e. take care of what you have so it lasts a long time). All I see in the future is a bunch of people with their hands out. But it's coming out of MY wallet!

Note...inventories are pretty tight on cars. Dealers aren't giving them away, the government is reducing the price a little.

So here is the math. Your truck is worth $1500-2000 or so. The dealer gives you $4500.

Without Cash for Clunkers draining inventory, you might get $2k off on the Camaro. Now, you are looking at getting $500 off. If it seems like more, check your financing terms carefully...very carefully.

Now, the Camaro will drop like a rock in value. Cars drop 15-20% per year in value. So in the first year your Camaro will lose maybe $5k in value. And possibly a bit more. In the end, it will cost a lot more. Enough to new 1-ton axles and new paint on your Ranger. Maybe new seats and carpets. Maybe new Radflos or SAWs. Definitely new Bilsteins!

Then...while the Camaro may be nice going to the supermarket...it will suck going to Home Depot or Lowes. And, instead of going places with an I don't care attitude, you will be in terror of the first paint chip.

As Jimmy Stewart said in 'Its a Wonderful Life': 'Ca-Can't you understand what's happening here? Don't you see what's happening? Potter isn't selling. Potter's buying. And why? Because we're panicky and he's not. That's why."

Of course, if you've had a L'Obamamy, you would probably just go ahead.
