Cash for clunkers giving me $4500.00 for my truck

Last year when scrap metel was at an all time high,I made weekly trips to the local crusher to pick up scrap batterys. It would break your heart to see what was crushed. Some people would drive the car/truck across the scales to sell it for $300 bucks.
The guy that ran the scales bought a 69 Caddy with 70K on the clock for $350,had a bad wheel bearing, not a dent in it.All the power windows worked! The seller backed it off the trailer and drove it across the scales.I could have cried!
I also watched them pull a S-10 BAJA edition in the shop, pull the wheels off and beat it to death with a bobcat.
This was a sharp little truck chevy fan or not.

Government Agency

A government agency that did what it was designed to do and very well is the I.R.S

i agree with jayfx4. that truck is way too nice to get crushed. you should be proud of that thing.

The Camaro's V-6 is supposed to be pretty peaky though, and doesn't really feel like it has 300 hp.

I read that in a review, I have yet to find someone to let me verify that...:icon_thumby:

Doesn't look to peaky. Appears to be a solid 250lb-ft+ across the board from 2000-6500rpm and 260lb-ft+ from ~4000-6000 in the meat of the powerband.

The 4 liter V6 mustang by comparison makes torque from about 2000 to 4000rpm where it falls off pretty good and is already wheezing by its 5300rpm power peak.

It probably doesn't "feel like 300hp" because it doesn't make the 325lb-ft like the 300-315hp mustang, and its a heavier car. But compared to its blue oval competition, the V6 Camaro is a supercar pulling a 1/4 mile a whole second faster. and even more amazing (embarrassing?) still, it runs the 1/4 about 2 seconds faster then the V6 challenger.

I would think even the guy running the crusher would cry! Lots of good rides going to be gone.

This is what concerns me, this Obamanation of ruining perfectly good older vehicles! Instead of sending them to the crusher, we could have perhaps gave the vehicles to Mexico?

I am still undecided on what effect this will have on our carbon footprint. (will crushing perfectly good street vehicles and basically getting a newer model goining to create more or less pollution vs driving a old vehicle?)

I am also concerned how this plays with the horrid thing called ANTI-CLUNKER LEGISLATION!! There are many State and local politicians seeking to use archaic nuisance laws to remove the millions of classic cars that await restoration. By declaring a vehicle parked on private property an eyesore, the government may force the owners, often elderly people on fixed incomes, to prove that these vehicles are in proper running order or face forfeiture?

How many collectors have fond memories of buying their first Chevy from the nice old ladies and gentlemen who were glad to see their treasured car, that held so many happy memories, go to a young person who would lovingly restore the car to showroom new condition? Is it fair to deprive owners and collectors of project cars awaiting restoration just because they can’t restore a car quickly enough to please the local bureaucrats?[/QUOTE]

This clunker for cash is utterly removing "parts cars" from the market! So people like me that have always owned 1st Gen Rangers (I'm driving my third ranger) are going to have tougher times finding a deal on parts/work trucks!

We already have a "cash for clunkers" program, it's called the salvage yard, and after ten years of sitting they go to the crusher.

I have never paid over $2k for a vehicle, and the last truck I bought I paid $500 for a shortbed 87 Ranger. Could I even find a good 1st Gen Ranger for $500 with this Government payout runnign amok?

I agree with you to a point (not with RBV's) There are just too many that were made to create a shortage of parts (now and in recent years)... I go to my local junkyard and there are rows and rows and rows of RBV's... On the other hand, vehicles that are semi-rare (Landcruisers, Early Bronco's, etc.) That aren't necessarily "collector" cars are going to go to the crusher, and that's a sad thought... I believe someone in the "chain" from where you turn it in to when it gets crushed can part out the vehicle, as long as drivetrain components get "disabled"... Meaning you will effectively have junkyard fodder, sans engine and emissions equipment (I believe the transmission can be parted)... It's not all entirely bad...
