With this Ranger talked about here , I stumbled into specifically , but for several years had gradually building itch to get back to my roots of 2wd P/U after mumble years of 4x4 SUVs , and still having one as primary , plus Mrs Biggfoot's .

I had intended for basic open bed , like my chronological #'s 1,2, and 4 P/U s . But Mrs Biggfoot and Littlefoot44 keep talking about getting me a Cap , apparently having memories of #3 , so equipped
So after some other business in town ( inside joke ) , I stopped into the major regional sell of such things to bring myself up to date .

For background , back in the day , I used to sell and install caps , so I have a baseline of their value/ cost . I know rose colored memories could be out of date , but even I can use the U.S. Government Inflation Calculator to know that between 1982 and 2020 inflation was 168% .

So back in early '80s , basic aluminum caps varied depending on the exact windows , and front slider or not . Prices were mostly $179- $199 , and you'd have to deliberately try to get it up to $219 ( plus $20-ish for installation) . Meanwhile Leer fiberglass was $400- somthing . We were certainly competitive in our pricing , but these Weren't loss leaders , cap were a significant part of the business , and made a decent profit at those prices .

Meanwhile , in 2020
Aluminum has all but disappeared , except for specific work truck rigs , and is More Expensive than Fiberglass !! And the prices are INSANE ! Alum frames and .019 sheet metal , and fiberglass molds are mature manufacturing technologies . Should have followed inflation , in not decreased in production costs with modern semi- automated welding .

But Nooo. Least expensive of anything starts at $1,700 . average around $2.5K . Are the mfg and sellers insane ? Are the buyers insane ?

They're resale value is about 0.2% of their original value so most people just buy them used. If you look long enough you can almost always find someone giving one away just to get it off their lawn. I got one for a 04 f350 a few months ago for $50 bucks...

Not saying it is perfect but for $40 I am happy with my Century:

Wtf is a cauliflower crust!?!

Just for reference...
The Leer fiberglass raised center roof with front and side sliders (screened sides), full size Ford, 8’ bed in 1995 was $1200.

Century caps are actually made by Leer. Been trying to find a camper shell for my 87 long bed Ranger, without any luck :(.

On local Facebook Marketplace there are dozens listed in my area from $50-150, short/long beds and glass/aluminum.
Just have to look and be patient.

No idea, it actually says 20th Century on the tag, I assume they droped the "20th" when the 21st century hit. Made in Indiana IIRC.

Long bed toppers are a bear to find.

Wtf is a cauliflower crust!?!

No idea, the tenderloin was really sad. Fish was awesome though. Neat place.

Gluten free pizza crust is made of cauliflower somehow. Ive had some that’s edible. But real pizza dough is made with high gluten wheat flower.

Furthermore, i found the original post difficult to interpret. So i skipped to the replies. When you asked about cauliflower crust, i had to go back and find out what he originally said about cauliflower crust. Only to read that whole mess and find out he didn’t mention it. Dirtman, i should smite thee for making me read all that.

It took me a minute to realize where he got the cauliflower crust question from too.

Oh. I thought it was a bathtub fungus induced random thought from Dirtman. But Now i see the sign in 85’s post

I'm very observant of disgusting things...

I got a new ‘glass cap in ‘91 for my ‘88 supercab, was a leer and cost $600 or $700. The last 2 caps I got for free, a aluminum one that was a 2 hr round trip to get, its kind of rough but was free. The 2nd free cap was along the road with a “free” sign beside it. Stopped and measured it then went for some C-clamps and help (since its a heavy leer ‘glass cap). Painted it white and its holding up good.

They sure aren't common in my area. I've been looking for about a year and haven't seen one for sale.

New caps are being bought less and less. One, they have fallen out for favor somewhat. People are opting for a hard or soft toneau cover, if anything, to cover their bed. They aren't the "cool" thing anymore. Two, partly because of one, cap pricing has sky rocketed. Less volume makes for higher costs because there is less sales to spread out the development costs for each new or refreshed truck model that has changed the profile of the bed, the cab, or both. I think, but I don't have anything to back that up, the cap manufacturers are pricing themselves out of business.

The cap on my 2011 was $1,800 and the cap on my 2019, that is shorter both in height and length, was $3,100. Granted, I got a few more options than I did for the 2011 cap and the 2011 cap was bought about 8 years ago, but at almost twice the price of a taller and longer fiberglass shell? Since there isn't a used market for 2019 Ranger caps, I was stuck with new or nothing.

Since the 2019 was bought to replace an SUV as a family hauler, the cap was more important for it than the 2011 for various reasons.

Long story short, I feel your pain both in the cost and the options. At least you have a used market to fall back on.
