Just dropped in new engine in 2006 ford ranger 4.0, took the engine out with the converter on, took off the converter, dropped it on the new engine, then put back into truck, is that where we went wrong? Its all lined up and everything, but can not crank manually. Thank you.:icon_confused:

The converter should have gone into the trans first, not onto the engine. It has to be turned and "locked" into place on the pump. You really cant do that with it on the engine.

Yes.

It's just like Sno said. And not doing it the right way locks the converter up. Pull the tranny out (pulling the engine out with the converter on it can damage the converter) and do it right. When the converter is in the whole way it will have clunked 3 times and look like it is in too far.

bought a new converter. lines up perfect, but can't get engine to line up with transmission

It's not always easy. Keep at it.

tried just about 7 hours trying to line them up, its like the flywheel wont accept the knob of the converter in, the 4 bolts line up off the converter into the flywheel, just cant maneuver the engine into the transmission

That's because you do not fit the engine to the transmission. You fit the transmission to the engine. You had to unbolt tran's mount and slide the trans back to remove the engine.
You have to install it the same way. set the engine in place 1st. bolt it up to the cradle, then slide the trans back in place and bolt it up.

I keep telling people that, but nobody ever wants to drop the trans.

well what made life a lot easier was putting the input shaft into its spot. my pops said he did, but apparently not. we unbolted the tranny, then dropped the engine in place, a few little rocks she slid right in, the tc bolts fell right into place on the flywheel too! thank you guys for your help. i dont know what i'd do without trs.

What I never under stand is why no one ever pulls them both at the same time when they are pulling the engine any way ? You need to check the converter or clutch and slave. You need to unbolt the trans mount and lines and way and remove the drive shaft.

i did the same thing. i dropped the motor in with the converter installed on the motor. you have to install the converter onto the spline on the transmission. spin it and push it wait for 3 "drops" then you drop the motor and attach it to the flexplate which will be bolted to the crank already. also i learned to tighten it down in a star pattern so that you dont warp the flexplate. then make dam well sure you tighten the hell out of the bolts that hold the trans to the motor. i did that and didnt check them after driving it a while. i destroyed my flexplate on the highway. then i come to find out that half the bolts to my trans had rattled loose the other half had rattled loose and fell out on the road somewhere.

yeah, i got the bolts pretty snug. and what i did was put the tc on the input shaft, had a framing square, and i saw that it was to close, so i wiggled it some more getting it in further, was about half an inch away from the framing square before we put the engine back in.

The proper process when pulling the engine and leaving the trans in the chassis

Is to start the whole job by pulling the starter motor and unbolting the Torque Converter through the starter hole.

Then slide the TC back into the bellhousing (it will retract ~1/2")

Lift the engine out

Reassemble by reversing the process.

My cousin RUINED a "Crate" Reman 4R55E trans by attempting to install the engine to the trans with the TC bolted to the engine

The TC must engage the trans front pump before you get the engine anywhere near it.

As the saying goes "Excellence is never making the same mistake once"

I ruined a perfectly good C4 back around 1978 by attempting the same
type of ignorant manuever.

Good thing ignorance (lack of knowledge) is curable
But it needs to be remembered that stupidity isn't cureable.
