cant get my 84 ranger started

just pulled the starter again and closely examined the flywheel. from the marks on the flywheal it looks like the starter gear is only grabbing the engine side of the flywheel. the teath looks good but there is a few with just the corner chiped off. does that mean its shot? or will entire teeth need to be broken to know for sure.

i think if the starter was a bit closer to the flywheel it would work so putting washers on the inside of the bolts would make it worse.

you need an impact to remove the flywheel. if yours is a 2wd it is not so bad of a job, on a 4wd you'll have to remove (pull back) a lot more (never did). I don't have a lot of tools, but at least you need a set of extensions and articulated joints for your ratchet or impact.

It won't hurt anything, But I would replace it to be safe Because later on in the future, Its gonna continue to naw on those chipped teeth until there is nothing left of it and gonna end up with a blown starter. The only way I got my flywheel off was a 1/2 inch impact driver.

Slow but cheap, was to rig something to jam the ring gear, so I could use my 1/2 drive stuff and had so little trouble with the job that I forget how I did it. I dont like beating on crankshafts as a general rule.

Just simply shim the starter, I just used a couple of washers as my local auto parts store didn't have the shim kit. Just use washers until you get it set properly. I have one in the top and bottom of mine and it seems to be working for now.
