i cannot find the heat shroud on the exhaust manifold on this engine. as far as i can tell, the only exhaust goes straight to the exhaust pipe. i need a heat shroud to return hot air into the air filter, as i'm having issues with carb icing and stalling in cold weather.

am i not looking hard enough? is it possible a previous owner removed the heat shroud. the intake ducts are all in place, but disconnected.

p.s. it was a cheap truck, which explains why its such a disaster under the hood right now.

I'm having a hard time understanding this, it might just be me. There shouldn't be anything that goes from the exhaust to your air box why would you want hot air in the air box. The only thing I can think that you think you might be missing is the tube that goes from behind the grill to the air box so that it draws in fresh air as you drive.

Heat shrouds are to help keep engine compartment temps down and to prevent some componets from melting the cooler a engine runs the better.

perhaps i'm using wrong description or terminology, simply put:

when i start the engine, the air filter is drawing cold air straight from on top of the carb. there is no intake duct connected to the air filter pan. the ducts are in place and has two valves: one to bring in warm air from the engine to circulate while engine is starting cold, and one leading to grille to bring in cold air.

the intake ducts are in place, but disconnected by a previous owner. there is an air duct leading towards the engine where i would expect there to be a valve to take in hot air during cold starts. but there's no connection for the hose.

sorry for the confusion, and lack of proper terminology.

heres the shield hes talking about, its bolted to the exhaust manifold

chances are the shield got rusty around the mounting bolts and was removed by the PO. motor mite makes the flexible metal tubing to hook your pre heater valve to the exhaust manifold, but youll have to make a shield out of tin or see if you can buy one? EDIT: i found a Walker part no for the shield, its 35569 and summit has one for 18.99 but theres no picture, i havent been able to find a pic anywhere so far. http://www.summitracing.com/parts/WLK-35569/

I didn't mean to insult you I just didn't undrestand correctly.

thanks. i changed the spark plugs and cleaned the carb. it idles fine now.

still don't want to take it out on road b/c it has no air intake. got a new filter, but needs the rectangular duct that goes from the air filter pan to the place where the hot/cold air intake switches. i have the rest of the air intake system in place to the grille, just missing that piece.

found a heat shroud on ebay, waiting for it to arrive. figure i might run an aluminum tube down there and try to fasten it in place some way until the part arrives.

any suggestions where to find the rectangular duct for the air intake? i called al the junk yards in town and they said they didn't have it. or they didn't want to go in the cold and look.

any ideas about making a temporary heat shroud until the part arrives. its getting very very cold here.
