I have been courious about this I want to get a little lift in the front (to get rid of normal sag) without having to buy spacers or replacing the entire spindle. Can you use 4x4 shocks on a 2wd Ranger? The shock itself mounts the same way but the 4x4 collapsed length is longer than the RWD length.

No...

Shocks do absolutely nothing to increase ride height.

You most likely bottom out the shocks.

Yeah, that... the pressure in the shocks only pushes about 30 pounds? it isn't much... the springs do it all, if you want a little extra height new springs for your model or switch to new springs from a 4.0L extended cab will be a bit taller, haven't priced out coils for the '98 and up Rangers... should be a pretty simple job with some spring compressors though.

Yeah, as Uncle Gump mentioned, if the 4WD shocks are longer fully compressed, you could bottom them out and tear up other things.

Maybe you could look at aftermarket springs.

Just thought about this: check the "sagging" springs carefully for damage. Coil springs can crack and break, though it's not common.
