drive it like ya stole it
OK, What about putting an all wheel drive out of a mountainer or explorer into a '94 Ranger?

can it be done? yes, anything can be done with enough time, patience, tools, and a big enough hammer.

will it be easy? probably not

Damn! someone thought of it. Ive been thinking about this for a long time, but i already have one project.

heres the issues ive thought of:

1. It would probably be easyier to start off with a 4wd ranger, 4wd ranger have a torsion bar front suspension if im not mistaken, maybe some early years dont.

2. Would the 4wd front diff screw with the awd transfer case or are all front diffs created equal?

3. what transmissions are in these explorers/mountaineers and would they hold up to any amount of power.

custom driveshafts front and rear will need to be made but any reputable driveshaft shop should be able to take care of that

Also consider whatever trans they put in AWD Lincoln Aviators because them had beefy V8's with impressive numbers.

GMC kinda did that with the Syclone in 1991....it is still one of the fastest/quickest factory trucks ever made. S-15 with a turbo 4.3L and AWD,with 280 HP it was quicker and faster in a quarter mile then a Ferrari 348t.

Are you talking about just putting an awd transfer case in and leaving the stock suspension? Or swapping in an Explorer front suspension too?

youd be better off starting with a 98 or newer ranger

More Info

I gotta kind of run what I got, which is a '94 Ranger 2wd with a Mazda 5 speed. The Mountaineer is a'97 5.0 with EOD. I'm not sure of the model of the trans (haven't been under to check yet). Anyway the point was to v-8 the Ranger, but this really piques my curiosity and (I'm sure), tax every fabrication bone in my body. Thanx for the great input so far.:icon_welder:

Im not sure i understand why? the frame should be the same.

Honestly the "hard" part would doing away with the twin i beam suspension and modifying the frame for the mountaineer front suspension and front axle.

Like I said before if you started with a 4wd ranger all youd be doing is putting in engine, trans, transfer case, measuring for custom driveshafts, and swapping rearend gears to match the front.

Because the '98+ Rangers HAVE the Explorer front suspension already in them. If you go a little later (I think about '01) you get a live front axle so you won't have to swap in anything out of the Explorer to have the same powertrain. Using Explorer parts you can delete the vacuum hubs from the '98-00ish trucks.

The engine bay part of the frame on a '98+ truck is the same as a '96-01 Explorer also, enginewise it is literally a bolt in swap.
