Im not very good with matching up rear ends and front ends and gear ratios and im wondering if i can run a stock dana 28 front axle with a ford 9 inch rear end..

my truck is a 89 ford ranger 2.9L 5 speed 4x4:icon_confused:

Sure, as long as the gear ratios match you could run a d28 and a rockwell.

What is a rockwell? i have never messed with all the gears and such so im just really confused on what i can do for cheap as i dont have much money right now and im trying to get this thing back in commission:dunno:

Nevermind what a Rockwell is.

Yes, you can run any mix-matched axles as long as the gear ratios match.

I take it your rear axle is blown?

yes the seals and bearing went bad in my rear end and now im wanting to replace it with my ford 9 inch rear end, something that would be better for my 33's good year wrangler kevlars im running, its my every day driver however once in a while i do some trailing around and gets a little ware and tear i will look and see what the gear ratios are on both axles tomorrow thanks for the help

an 8.8 would probably fit your app more... but if you already have the 9, go for it.

just find out your gear ratios front and rear.. make sure they are the same.

You can run whatever you wish as long as the gear ratios match. you realize you will have different bolt patterns front to rear. Also unless this 9 is from an early bronco it's going to be wider than your stock axle. If you have the CV driveshaft you will need a new driveshaft too. If you have the u- joint you might be able to find a conversion u joint to mate yours to the 1310 flange that should be on the 9in.
