Can i get an opinion? BIG Decision

Did a compression test and all cylinders were in the 170's i wanna say 175ish...
Gapped my plugs while there too...

Tested the EGR and is definetly NOT working... So thats on my shopping list

As for the PRE02 i got the numbers from pretest over the phone and i thought thats what he said... so yea im sure its what you think it is sorry bout that!

Im ordering my parts friday and will report back...
Thanks Guys

Hey Im looking on Ebay for an EGR
would this fit my ranger?
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1985...ptZMotorsQ5fCarQ5fTruckQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories

I have cross refrenced some #'s off napa and chk with little luck...
some look identical and have similiar #'s but i def do not want to order off ebay unless im 100%

So any help would be great!

And i dont know the going rate as far as compression?
How's mine? Good? Bad? In the Middle?

I know you guys are sick of me and this thread lol?

Did my share of searching for a decent compression rate for 1st gen 2.8's
and nothing!

And also some insight/tips on where to buy my new egr would help too...

2.8s run on sludge for a year or 2:icon_twisted: thats what i got out of mine when i first got to oil changed in it. the preveous owner probably never changed the oil for more than 2 years before i got it. but make sure the numbers match completly.

Thanks Wrecking...

What do you mean changed? which are you talking about...

And yea they all were in the 172-175 mark...

Yes the compression is good. The overall compression is actually more important than the number. All should be within 10% of the highest number. That sounds good, sounds like it just may be running too rich and has lowered the overall co2 levels. As far as part numbers I have no idea not a parts guy.

Ohhh Sorry got confused...
I just changed mine 2 days ago... But before that god knows how long its been!

Will do on the egr! but i look on napa and kragen and each have a couple on both sites...
and they range from $120-$180 but managed to find some on ebay real cheap look identical but diff #s

Great... Thanks Mental!
Gapped the plugs too ALL of em were horribly gapped some to .25 some to .55
CRAZY!
So what now mental?
Replace my parts? go from there?

i know it may be cheaper to buy off ebay, but in my opinion, just go to napa or advance and buy the egr. it will be right when you leave the store(assuming that you will make sure its right at the store) and all you have to worry about it swappin out parts. ebay is good for accesories and some mechanical parts, but when your messin with emmissions, might as well pay the money and have the hassle behind you.

Well yes sounds like you need an egr but is it still running hot? That will also cause higher NOX levels. The plug gap will cause increased Co an HC's, but the low o2 along with the others sounds like it's still running rich.

Thanks 88GT good thinking..

Mental-I took out the egr tonight to see if i can see why its not working...
There was a ton of carbon in the two holes on both the egr and the intake.
So i cleaned it out real good... not the intake becuase i didnt want crap falling in...
and hand tested the egr and functioned as it should? also i tested the electronic pin on the top and also is working? i dont quite understand now? next step for me is to clean the passage ways on the intake when i do my valve job...

And yes it seems to be running a little hot... i refilled with coolant today old+fresh then when i find a little more time im gonna flush it and have all fresh coolant...

im pretty tempted to just replace the tstat just so i know its new and know it works...

3 weeks ago bought a 83 ranger
-Idled high failed CA smog
-Rebuilt the carb (not a huge difference)
-Had my buddy come check it out (mechanic)
he told me it sounds like i might have a rod knock and he cant figure out whats up becuase i cant pull codes... Pulled once and said something about tpd and ect out of range replaced both... now i cant pull anymore codes for some reason... My buddy is gonna come back with a steathoscope and listen but cant really say for sure yet... he said if its a knock i should get rid of it...
i dont want to get rid of it all ready i feel like im giving up... and i really like my truck... its just he said in his position get a new one or theres the option of throwing money into it in which you will NEVER get back becuase its old..

So im thinking of maybe getting a new engine or selling it...

Please guys let me know what i should do
Me personally, I would park the truck and save up for an engine swap for 3 reasons.
1. You wont get much for an almost 30 year old truck with a bad engine.
2. As far as Im concerned a 1st gen Ranger is a collectors item.
3. You can do a v8 swap :icon_welder:

Remember if you don't have the money to fix it now just let it sit at your house. There is no time limit:woot:

^^^ No rod knock, Decent compression so im keeping what i got... might as well if it were to crap out... Ehhh... then yea but this winter im tearing it done and doing a rebuild...

Thanks tho man appreciate the feedback
Anyone got any answers to the #72 post 3 up^^^
Im reaaallllly curious!
