Buying an old Bronco II with shot transmission!

Hi,

I'm purchasing a used Bronco II with a shot transmission (A4LD, won't shift from 2nd to 3rd) and an engine that seems to run fine, but the idle RPM will fluctuate.

My question is:

How much will it cost to have a chopped top conversion done for me + a custom soft top?

Should I buy a remanufactured transmission or should I just have it rebuilt by a transmission repair shop?

Thanks!

I suppose the more important question is how much mechanical experience you have or confidence. You can do just about anything if you do your research.

My experience working on cars is somewhat limited. Give me enough time and I can figure it out.

The main problem is that I'm living in a dorm room so that doesn't give me much room to work on the vehicle, haha.

Yeah i wouldnt want to do a trans swap in a dorm parking lot lol. For your chop top a sawzall will do the job but a custom made top is gonna be pretty expensive. I think i saw somewhere it cost someone around 300bucks just to have black canvas/vinyl button on side windows

Well, my budget is $14k and the BII was $750 + $2230 for a remanufactured transmission, + $400 or so for a roll cage!

With a budget of $14K and living on campus in a dorm, the last thing I would be doing is putting another A4LD in it.

Lol with that budget id either have like 3 b2s or my b2 and 57 would be done with another proje ct in the works like a fullsize bronco or something that actually goes fast. ( turbo coupe or terminator mustang?)

If i were you id be ordering up a coyote motor a built T5
and some snazzy locking 1 ton axles or something

Really, 14K and you wanna do that. 302, 5 speed, explorer axles, lift kit, rims and tires lol. Just saying. :icon_hornsup: Be a lot more fun to drive and reliable too.

I gave it to the tranny shop to get a reman in it.

My budget has gone down because I bought an 04 F150 for my DD. I'm going to go ahead and get the chop top conversion done on the bronco and make it my summer car.

Would you guys recommend a rebuild of the 2.9L or a 4.0L swap?

Also, I know it's heresy, but I can't drive a stick which is why I'm sticking with the A4LD

4.0... but I would rather have a 5.0 which would kinda negate your rebuilding the A4LD.

But the A4LD for the 4.0 was beefed up over the 2.9... and it still was far from bulletproof.
