build thread for 2.8 carb to chevy tbi.

it is essentially the exact pump as the pre-'89s used in-line

Just got done swapping in the in tank 87 fuel pump. And on 2-3 gallons of gas she seems to be running fine. Fuel filter was a little dirty so i washed it out.

so, the problem was exactly what I suspected? for whatever reason your secondary pump wasnt getting enough fuel from the primary pump?

I knew having it "suck" fuel would cause problems with injection

If it's sucking then there's a problem. I can unhook mine from the back of my pump and it will drain my tank dry due to it now has a siphon effect going on and his is mounted the same location and way as mine.

He said it runs fine, nothing about driving.

It's the engine really consuming that much fuel to where a 35gph low pressure pump can keep up?

I ran the 3.8 tbi setup on my old 2.8 and I know it fed the engine way more then this setup does, I got 6-8mpg with it but no time to fine tune it so I went duraspark, and never had a fuel starvation issue. At WOT, you would be looking like a diesel truck getting on it.

The good thing though, stated right up no matter how cold it hot it was and be able to drive immediately if wanted.

Im guessing so. If i coulda mounted the low pump further below the tank. I guess it would have been fine. I wonder how my shity gas gauge will react to the new sender. Danger keep in mind this is a return fuel system...

Mine was a return system too.

yes, and on a return style system, if the pump has the capability to push more fuel than the engine uses, it all just ends up back in the tank. so the supply to the pump needs to be sufficient to feed it at the pump's capacity, not the engine's capacity

Anyway, drove her to school and back without a hickup. Now only time will tell. Ive got enough power to maintain highway speeds. Ill report back on my gas milage in a week

I am glad to hear that.

I knew it was a fuel delivery to the secondary pump issue, and I am glad it is solved

Everything has been running great, ill fill up tomorrow and report my gas milage. I have discovered one little quirk, wondering what yalls opinion is on it. Ill post the video when its done loading. Any way she develops a loopy idle in gear while at a stand still and occasionally losses hp when driving. Like cruising easy 60-70 to barely being able to maintain 45. She also surge a little when doing really slow speed maneuvers

I would assume your fuel pressure is good when this is happening?

A surging idle sounds like an egr valve but not sure if you are running one.

Nope ive deleted all emissions, not even sure if you could adapt this ecm to the egr valve. Fuel pressure bounces between 16-17 sometimes it hits 19 but never below 15. Im still trying to get the video to upload.

I know this would be hard to test driving but is the timing staying in timing and it's not retarding/advancing when it's not suppose to?
