build thread for 2.8 carb to chevy tbi.

manuals.

auto transmissions need a higher idle when in gear to keep from stalling

I wonder if when i get a custom chip burned i can make one of the wires a park neutral wire to tell the ecm to drop the idle speed.

as I recall, way back in the beginning of this thread I mentioned that I wasn't sure of the ramifications of doing this with an auto trans

Well the have been presented. I will just deal with it for now. As long as she doesn't bog on me again.

I say, just bump the idle up a little, and it might go away, btw, what is your base timing set at?

Cant really tell i had it at a good place where it idels some what smooth. I see a white notch line up with the pointer if that means anything.

Something new heard what sounded like either the rockers slapping or a knocking or pinging, font know how each one sounds. It was a suttle ting ting ting. And also when this started the 4.0 radiator couldnt keep the engine cool. It would get up to 220 when i was going up small long hills and then drop down to 200 it normally stays at 190

we (at this elevation) set them to 12-13 btdc @ idle. timing has huge bearing on the idle quality

Again dont know how to read degrees. Just tried to set it at its best idle. She didnt stall on me today. Still lost power for a mile like the ecm just decided to retard the timing for no reason.

I would really look into learning about how to set timing and what the marks on the harmonic balancer mean. I've set timing by how well something idles and did fine but when going to drive, had no power.

I hate to rag on you too much, but this scenario is a bit laughable

Q) "I changed out my entire ignition system, and now I have a running issue"

A) "what did you set your timing to?"

Q) " I have no idea, but I have spent tons of time looking at everything else"

A) "you didn't look at timing first?"

Q) "I didn't know how, so I just ignored it...."

everything I have said up until this point was under the impression that you knew how to time your engine. get it timed correctly first, then look at other things

Alright i swing by my friends and hook a timing light up to it. My mechanic said it was dead on a month ago. I do feel a little foolish for my lack of knowledge. So forgive me.

i don't mean to make you feel foolish. but you do need to know, that timing can make a very large difference.

i'm not saying that it is a guarantee that is your problem. But I am saying that it should have been done right the first time, and until we rule it out, you can't figure anything else out

Ok doky, on a side note the magic number so far is 1100rpms for non stall idle once slipped in to gear. In gear it drops to 900. Ill try to find the timing marks tomorrow.

well, an 1100 rpm idle could be tolerable. does your stalling go away? did you readjust the TPS after you raised the idle?

No completely forgot about that. Will reset it tomorrow.
