Bronco 2 towing GCWR

I am looking to tow a pop up trailer this summer with my B2.The factory bumper towing capacity I beleve is 2000 lbs.and my GVWR is 4200lbs. So when figuring what I could tow do I include the cargo weight(750 lbs) and the trailer weight (1700 lbs) or would 2000 lbs be max load overall?

Given the short narrow wheel base of the Bronco 2, I wouldn't want to be towing much with one at all 2k is a lot of weight and will definitely push the B2 around especially in a cross wind or from a passing 18 wheeler.

To figure what you can tow, you need to add up all the weight that you will have in the B2 including yourself, passengers, gear, fuel, as well as the tongue weight of the trailer, etc. Then subtract that from your gross vehicle weight. That will tell you what you can tow. I bet its far less than 2000lbs that you will be able to still tow. Basically its a vehicle to get you from point a to point b, its far from being a tow rig.

I was reading somewhere a while back and someone mentioned you can tow up to 3500lbs with a regular tow hitch receiver with a Bronco 2, I just laughed at it, poor thing can barely manage to move itself around.

With just using the bumper as your hitch, I really wouldn't want to try towing much weight at all with it, its just not meant for the sudden weight shifts that will occur stopping, starting, cross winds, etc.

I have a '87 Factory BII brochure that states up to a 8500lb GCWR (5000lbs trailer weight). Unfortunately it doesn't break it down by equipment (I know a BII with 3.73 or 4.10 axle ratio typically has a higher GCWR than one with 3.45 ratio).

I've towed a 12' enclosed trailer ~4000lbs with mine. It maintains highway speed on level roads fine, but going up any sort of a grade is another story .
Haven't had much issue with wind from passing trucks, etc. (no more than when not towing the trailer). However I do use a light-duty (single-bar) load distributing hitch , something anyone towing more than 50% or so of a SWB vehicle's weight should do.

With 1700lbs you'd probably be fine with just the normal ball hitch.

I figured a small pop up trailer under 1000lbs with a class 2 hitch which am installing this weekend and 500 lbs of cargo in the Bronco would be in range of my Bronco to handle.

The brochure says 8500 lbs ?? wow, that seems awful high to me for a truck thats 4200. I put a class 5 on mine just because it was sittin here but the trailer I pull is probably about 1500-1750 max loaded, B2 is 3940, its a box trailer about 2 ft deep, pulls real good, stops real good. Ive moved my 3200 lb trailer with the B2 but dont think I would want to pull it too far.

When I bought my 84 Bronco II it had a receiver hitch rated for 5000lbs already installed which makes me laugh every time I see it.

Same here. Pretty sure the PO installed the one on mine. Only good thing is since its a standard receiver it accepts all the regular 2" hitch accessories. Other than that I'd think about 2000-2500lbs would be about all I'd ever be towing behind a B2. I have a full size truck for hauling and towing, the B2 is just my DD beater rig till I can find something more suitable.
