Box Alternatives?

the box on my 2002 XLT Off Road (flareside) is rotting away.

what are my options other than finding a salvage box??

are there any off road box kits or off road/prerunner style replacement boxes on market?

Several companies make fiberglass box sides IIRC that are flared for prerunners. All depends on if the inner part of bed is worth hanging bedsides on or not. I have never heard of anyone making off road boxes though.

my fiberglass sides are good.

my inner box has rot along the seams.

i was hoping there was manufacturer that sold completed tube beds or kits.

Mine had the common Ranger problem: two rust holes in the bed just above the exhaust pipe on the passenger's side. I felt a need to stop all the rust underneath so I removed the bed and media blasted the flakey rust away. Next I painted on a coat of POR 15.

After that I decided go go strictly old school. Mine is a step side after all. I thought why not install an oak bed? I did exactly that and finished it with three coats of varnish. I had heard that some oil the wood with linseed oil. It's great stuff, but doesn't block UV rays which turn the wood gray in time.

The exhaust is different two. I could be wrong but hope that twin pipes might resolve those hot spots underneath.

that wood bed looks sweet. reminds me of my 79 chevy stepside. does that horn work well there? i ask since its facing backwards?

I'm looking at the Ranger Reg Cab Stepside the last of a one hundred year old tradition. Those older step sides were once bedded with white oak. White oak is not at all prone to rot, wears like iron, will not rust. It made sense in those days when wood was cheap.

That sure looks like a horn, but it's not. It's a guide for the tire change tool which allows the user to engage a crank that lowers the spare.
