i bought the truck cheap, mainly for practical use, but some fun - don't really care how it looks.

I didn't hear it run or any thing and was told it only needed a battery.
I charged a battery and went to try to start the truck.Nothing but solenoid click. The oil dipstick was also stuck.
so we pushed it home and i jacked it up and crawled under.
There was a rod stickin out of my pan. I took it to school, where we have a lift and many tools, and pulled the motor. There is a piece of the block dislodged on the dipstick, and the rod is mangled, the piston is still stuck in the cylinder.
Engines toast right?
I'm don't have a lot of money right now, but want to fix the truck.
I live in southern NJ. My questions are:
How much should a 2.9 cost where i pulled it myself at a junkyard
If i couldn't ind a 2.9, what is the next best thing to put in?
about how much would the other motors, trannys, wiring harnesses and all cost at a junkyard if i were to do a swap
all input, information and advice is greatly appreciated

the next best thing is a 4.0 or a 5.0 lol that engine is toast. where are you located?

Im in Burleigh / Whitesboro part of southern NJ. Cape may county - middle township
why do you ask?

wanna get rid of the fuel injection system off that? or possibly a few parts?

a solid running 2.9 is prolly your best bet...but they are getting hard to find.

next best bet...is the 4.0 just about a direct swap. more info in the Tech Library

I have questions about the 4.0 swap:
could I run my 2.9 distributor with the 4.0 and possibly keep the original harness?
If that is possible how could I have the right airflow - because I'm not sure if I have the speed density of maf
it is the same block as the 2.9 if I read correctly-
- jus throwing some ideas out - I appreciate all help and input I am reviving - thanks all

I'm thinking it depends on the vintage of the 4.0....the later ones used coil pacs instead of distributor...maybe real early ones used distributors??

as far as the harness goes ...doubtful...cause it will be segmented differently than the 2.9...Pretty sure thats why it is recommended to get all that from the donor...so sensors and things are wired correctly. including the upgrade to the MAF

as far as the block...they are simular on the outside the internals are different the tranny should bolt up

I don't think any 4.0 used a dizzy, my buddies exp. with 4.0 is a 91 and has coilpacks, and I looked at a 5 speed exp. that i think was manufactured as one of the First(07/90) and it had Coilpacks

A 4.0 computer will not run a 2.9 engine, Tried once just to see, and no dice.

As far a oil pump drive, i know that the oil pumps are interchangible, I just put one in my 2.9 and the box says 2.9 and 4.0 60deg ford v6 on the box. Yes the 2.9 has hex both in oil pump and on the cam end of the shaft, not sure if the 4.0 is star on one end of the shaft and hex on the other, but the pumps themselves are interchangible.

i understand that 4.0 was a distributor-less engine, but i was wondering if i could take may 2.9 distributor and put that in the 4.0 And since i keep my ignition system, i - in theory - would be able to use the 2.9 harness
but that brings up the MAF problem again
^^probably not goin to work^^
but just curious if it sound feasible

i went to the junkyard recently
i found three or four 2.9L engines, ( i couldn't get the one hood open )but the trucks all looked to have no other problems. My guess is that the motor might be bad.
Same thing with the many many 4.0L s there. They all had the motor but the truck itself looked fine.
so that had me a little worried
what can i test to see if a motor is usable?
what usually happens to these motors that causes them to go?

Just look out for Cash for Clunker's vehicles at the yard. Around here they can be identified by lime green spray paint over the top of the engine and a tag saying that the engine was destroyed under the CFC program.

As far as price, this is what I expect to pay in my area:

They pull it and give a 30-day warranty: $400
You pull it and they give a 30-day warranty: $250
You pull it and they give no warranty: $50 (good way to get a core to start a rebuild with)

Add 20% to all those numbers if you want accessories and/or the computer and wiring harness for it.

The transmissions can vary widely in price. At a large commercial yard they will want somewhere around $300-400 for a working tranny with some sort of warranty. But if it's a family-owned operation and the owners are bigtime chevy lovers and hate fords, they just might let you have it for 20 bucks if you pull it. It all depends really. I guess the same goes for engines too.

The trucks are most likely in the junkyard for transmission problems, not engine problems.
