Blow up my clutch and pressure plate doing a burnout!!!

I there...I just completly blown out my clutch and break my pressure plate doing a small burnout with my 2005 Ranger 4.0L

I just bought it two weeks ago...and was having a little fun with my tire...because they have to be replace anyway...

so I did a little burnout...like 5-6 seconds...then ''bang'' I heard this sound from under...and then the clutch start slidding to the max...having difficulty to run 10 mph...

I went to my repairman...and he told me he never saw that kind of damage...everything around the clutch was broken...

it will cost me about 400$ of parts and around 6 hours of time...


is is that dangerous to do some burnout with a Ranger like mine...or I just have been very unlucky???

a "6 second burnout" is not a small burnout, as you put it. considering that in racing all quarter mile time are in seconds. you probably had enough wear on your clutch components that, depending on how you started the burnout, yeah you could of exploded alot of stuff in there. my bet, despite what you say, is that you probably dumped the clutch and mashed it to the floor. rule #1, NOT A GOOD IDEA :nopityA:, i ain't saying that i don't do it myself :rolleyes: , but i know what i'm in for when i do. i would suggest that you have your flywheel resurfaced [because of the torture] or even replaced, and then get the best quality clutch and pressure plate you can afford [yes they make different grade clutch kits] don't be cheap, everybody likes to play and tear shit up now and again, just be prepared to pay out the nose if you decide to be cheap.
 
yes my Flywheel has been resurfaced...but I ordered a complete kit from Ford...brand new...and the kit was quite complete...

I knew that doing burnout wasn't good for the clutch itself...but I never tought it could break the pressure plate...damage the flywheel...and so on...


I think I will go easier on the burnout for now on...

we always learn from our mistake!!! :fie:
 
"Expolding" clutches. That is the reason every "real" race care is required to have a steel protective plate between the clutch housing and the driver's feet. In the early days of hot rodding when engines began to get some real horsepower, a few drivers had major foot damage from an exploding clutch/pressure plate assembly. Today most race cars have special explosion proof bellhousings. Thanks for sharing your mistake - might keep someone else from getting hurt dollarwise or otherwise.

Any vehicle will only take so much abuse, and learning this comes with maturity! I would have thought this would have been learned by 29.

I know...but I did some much bigger burnout with a lot of cars...and I never add that kind of problem...

it's just yelling me that a Ranger is not a good car to do some burnout...

to fragile on the clutch assembly...
 
If you are so eager to do a burn out in the ranger do one of these 2 things. Put in a V8 or buy a auto and do a power brake.

What part of a burnout are you amused with? The sound, smoke, or smell?
 
$400? You got screwed.


not that much...in fact for all I got It was not that high...

because there was not only the clutch...the pressure plate was broken in 3 pieces

and the kit was coming with clutch bearing and push rod assembly...

and it's 400$ Canadian $....here in Canada the parts are at least twice as high as in the USA...


my mechanic is my friend and was surprised of the price...he tought it would be much more for that whole kit...

the clutch alone was 200$

You were lucky nothing entered the passenger area of the cab. Don't do a launch like that unless there is a blowshield around the clutch.
