can i install my new trans without putting the block plate between the trans? i have the old block plate piece that the previous owner had cut off that goes around the starter. can i run it like that till my plate comes in from ford? also how hard would it be to loosen the tranny some after the new plate comes in to put it on? does it just need to come out far enough to slip it on the dowel pins? i was thinking i could take the bolts out and take the bolts out the xmember and leave it still hooked to the trans and slide it back far enough to put it on, or does the whole trans need to come out? thanks guys, i need to get my new trans in, my borrowed car needs to be returned lol

It's not a good idea to bolt the trans up without the plate, as damage to the bellhousing can happen at the starter, as well as cracking/breaking the starter casing...And as far as installing the plate after the trans is in the truck IE swapping the plates out, yes, you can slide it back just enough to come off the dowel pins to install the plate, all the bellhousing bolts will need to come out....

I'd wait till you have the new plate, did you try to see if any of the junk yards had one???

IIRC, the early block plates do not just slide up behind the flywheel, but rather you have to remove all the bolts and possibly the flywheel to get it off. I'll look at my old one when I get a chance.

the guy that had the b2 before me just cut the part off around the starter, so thats all i have. im puttin an fm146 trans in but ordered a block plate for a m5od as i was going to put a 2wd one in so i could get this thing running. hope it fits the 146

You must realize that the block plate goes behind the flywheel , so you can't just slide it back a bit , you have to slide it back far enough to remove the flywheel.
Just wait and save yourself the time and aggrevation.

aight that sucks, i was thinking it was like my jeep, and i dont really remember how my block plate was on my 2.3 and m5od.

Not true, my M5OD one slid up behind the flywheel. However, some of the early ones did not if I remember correct.

The block plate is what locates the starter - bad idea to not have one.

Also, on the Colognes, you can't just slide the trans back a few inches and slip it in like you can with the Tritons. The flywheel has to come off.
