I am installing a cargo lamp in my camper shell, opinions needed on the "correct" way to route the cable into the bed.

LED battery powered one. Get a motion sensor one and it'll come on for you.
When I had a cap put on my Ranger, they had to wire up a third brake light and a cargo light, they brought the wires up behind the taillight and then through into the bed. I don't remember them drilling a hole but I'd have to look again, there might be a hole and grommet tucked in up near the bed rail. Then they just put some insulated spade connectors on there so that when the cap was off, the wires just got unplugged and tucked out of the way.
Seems like it would be a relatively easy spot to run to and leaves things neat and out of the way, at any rate. They did the same thing on mine. I'm guessing that might be the best way to do it.
