Best Trans Fluid For a 87 Manual?

ok thanks alot for the info

the only difference i think between the mazda trans in the pictures and mine is that mine both have a removable bell housing and in the picture they do not. so do mazda transmissions have removable bell housings too then or is it a mitsubitsi??

im going to take a better look at the trannies tommorow

the whole reason behind my question is that when i got the tranny thats in the ranger now it would whine only a little bit but then i changed the oil and put gear lube in it. now it really whines loud so thats why i figured i should probebly figure out what kind of oil its supposed to take.

thanks,
wayne

The mazda do NOT have a removable bell houseing, it's all one piece, if yours have the removeable bellhouseing, the it's a mitsu, and you have to use gear oil.

alright so i went and took a better look at them today and i think they are both toyo toygo transmissions. they both have those 2 squareish black covers in the middle near the top.

like this but then 2wd

the only difference i can find between the old one and the new one is that the speedometer is off about 30 miles or so

so do those trannies take gear oil too or something else?

thanks,

If the manual trans has ANY KIND of removeable "bottom cover" it takes gear oil.

If you put gear oil in those transfer cases you'll need a tow truck after about a month.

the transfer cases all have an internal oil pump, attempting to pump thicker fluid will cause the pump, which "floats" on the shaft and is kept from rotating inside the T-case
by an anti rotation arm which is a cast part of the pump body to snap off allowing the pump to spin with the shaft and stop pumping.

Once that happens the T-case will fail shortly thereafter.

It will fail by "locking up" and snapping off the transmission extension housing.

WHEN that happens you WILL be having a "bad day"
