I'm having a problem with the new 31's I got for my truck. I love them in all conditions except rain. They have no traction at all with just a little rain on the road. (I spun out turning a corner I have done hundreds of times, but first time with these tires on this truck)

Is this something I just have to deal with, or is there a brand people have had good results with. Will having a mismatched set (2+2) cause me problems, 2 are futura and 2 are goodyear.
I like having the 31's, but if I can't find a way to get better traction I have to go back down in size. No one got hurt this time, but I don't want to risk it.

what air pressure u runnin i normally runned 32-35psi in my old 31's

Two are goodyear wrangler rts, two are futura scrambler ap and all 4 have over 70% average tread. Right now they are at about 40 psi. I havn't regeared yet and if I run them less than 40 psi they create a noticable drag. They are rated for 50psi.

I know passenger tires loose lots of wet traction when underinflated, is it reversed for tires like these? Air up for highway, air down for offroad, ? for street in rain

What set are you running on the drive wheels? What tires did you have before?

I know the link mentions FWD, but the concept is the same for RWD.

Well there is a difference between underinflating tires and having them at the correct pressure. same goes with over inflating a tire... the tire becomes very very hard and thus loses traction fron being too hard. Especially in rain, its like installing drag slicks... lower the pressure to like 32 - 35 psi and you will see increased traction. If that hleps you may gain some extra traction from siping the tires.

I'd say your tires are over inflated. When you over inflate the tire you actually reduce the contact with the road and thus reduce traction. Try running them at 32 psi.

Agreed, pay no attention to the side wall pressure ratings, go by the door sticker for the truck.

i dont have any experience with the futura tires but those goodyears are terrible in nearly every condition especially rain. every set ive had were terrible in the rain.

True dat. Wore out real fast too, which I regarded as a GOOD thing.

hmmm... isn't that what got the early Xploders into all those rollovers?
With the tire recall you also got a new door sticker that said 30 lb. in the rears. Ford spec'd 26 lb in the rear so that the tires would lose traction rather than have too much traction and cause a rollover. As a result, the tires would overheat and blow out, sometimes causing a rollover. :D However the blowouts only occurred with Firestone tires made at one specific Firestone factory.

Factory recommended psi on Rangers equipped with 31x10.50's is 30 lb.

The best A/T's I've ever had in rain were Bridgestone Dueler REVO's, but again they are a tire that wears out pretty fast.

yes, they were Bridgestone's. Ford opted to settle all the claims out of court and the tire mfg. tried to fight it because they knew the door stickers were not what they stated on the sidewall. we'll never know who was really right in their science, Ford or Bridgestone.

Toyo Open Country AT's. excellent in rain, snow, and ice. they are not cheap, but that's the price for quality.

It was firestone.... not bridgestone... two different companies...

and Toyos are an excellent way to piss away money IMO. The only thing going for them is odd size selections... other then that they are just a really expensive tire that is average and wears really fast....
