Ranger Station peeps,

Does anyone have a diagram/picture showing the location of the bed bolts on a 2002 Ranger XLT?

I need to replace the fuel pump and research has shown that removing the bed is the "easiest" way. I'd like to do that rather than dropping the tank...especially with all of this snow on the ground!

Also, if anyone has any tips for diagnosing/replacing a fuel pump, it would be most appreciated! Truck is deader than a doornail right now. :bawling:

Thanks in advance!

Joe

there should be 6 in the bed, if you look you should see them. You also need to take the filler neck off as well as the taillights.

Thanks, Casper98.

I've got a bedliner installed so I may have to remove it to get to those bolts in the bed...after I shovel out all of the snow!

Are the bolts installed down or up? Meaning, are the threads/nuts under the truck or in the bed?

I think I need a T55 socket, right?

Joe

yes torx 55. i bought 2 in case one breaks. pull the liner off. there are 2 bolts at the front of the bed and 2 bolts at the beck. 2 more are about 18" from the back. there are clip type nuts that are on the frame. hit them with liquid wrench. you should get a breaker bar or a pipe for your rathchet. MY bolts were kind of trashed and the ford dealer wanted $16 each I bought some online for $2 each they have a regular hex head. like posted earlier you also have to pull the gas filler off and THERE IS A DISCONNECT AT THE END OF THE BED FROM UNDERNEITH THAT LETS YOU DISCONNECT THE WIRES FOR THE LIGHTS. yOU DO NOT NEED TO PULL THE WIRES OUT. i CHANGED MY REAR SHOCKS WHILE THE BED WAS OFF. i TOOK THE BED OFF TO REPLACE MY REAR LEAFSPRING SHACKLES AND HANGERS. yOU SHOULD CHECK YOURS BUT i BET THEY ARE FINE BEING IT IS A 2002

why do you think you need a fuel pump. Tell us what the issue is and see what we come up with. It is good to update your vehicle profile with as much info as possible. Use mine as a template describe your symptoms as best as possible, any codes if you have checked, what maintenance has been done to the truck?

I pulled the bed off my truck this weekend to replace fuel pump + shocks. It took me about 2 hours for all of it. I did it outside and took quite a few breaks as it was cold. I would just make sure you have an extra guy to help you lift the bed off.

you want to test for fuel pressure at the shrader valve on the fuel rail. you are looking for about 60 koeo, koer. you want to make sure you have a clean fuel filter on there. I think on your year the fuel filters are easy to change . they have a push button on them.

modelageek,

Thanks for the info!

I suspect the fuel pump as I had recent (over a month or so) issues with the truck starting. Twice, after I called AAA for a tow, the truck started (so, I cancelled the service calls). The 3rd time I had to have it flatbedded to home. Luckily, it was only a mile away!

I've replaced relay 46A (fuel pump) and no dice. I've checked the inertia switch and wiring. All look good. I had someone turn the key so all of the dash lights went on and I listened at the fuel filler (gas cap off) for the sound of the pump priming...nothing! So, I naturally thought that it might be the pump.

I haven't had a chance to check any voltages near/at the pump. I did try to whack the fuel tank with a rubber mallet. So far, nothing.

The fuel filter has never been replaced. I bought the truck in 2005 and it has only seen about 25K miles since it was purchased (used from a dealer). I think it needs a new air filter, too.

Is my profile updated? I put in some extra info.

Thanks, HareRazor!

P.S. A link to the site for the bed bolts would be appreciated as I'm sure I'll break a few trying to take the bed off.

Joe

Just saw your post...

Yeah, I also bought a Purolator fuel filter from Pep Boys the other day, too.

Joe

how many miles on the truck. does the truck run now. when you listened for the fuel pump was this one of the times it was not starting. I believe if the pressure is full the pump does not run. if you relieve the fuel pressure(carfeully) then turn it to koeo you will know if it is working. do you have any codes? can you do a pressure test? A real dirty airffilter can screw up the starting.

modelageek,

Thanks, you've been helpful and I appreciate that!

The truck has less than 55K miles on it now. It is not running as of last week (last Sunday when I had to have it towed home). After I dug it out of the recent snow here in PA, I listened to the pump. The truck hadn't been running. One previous symptom was that I left the truck sit for a little while and it started up again.

I don't have any codes (but do have AutoTap!). I can try relieving the fuel pressure and maybe replacing the fuel filter to see if that does anything. I can also remove the air filter and replace it with a new one (which I have) or just leave it out temporarily to see if the truck starts.

I'll need to either purchase or borrow a fuel pressure gauge to test pressure at the fuel rail.

Joe

If you let it sit for a while then start it and it worked... then I would try Turning it over with your foot hard on the gas for a minute. Mine does it every once in awhile. not sure what it does besides maybe opening up the air more and dumping fuel in...

sounds like you have a good grip on it. if you have power at the inertia switch and the switch is all set. next up would be if your pump turns on after relieving the pressure. then you most likely have isolated your issue. When it does not start have you checked for spark. does the autotap read fuel pressure? Harbor freight sells a pressure gauge for less than $20. I think AZ lends them out. keep us posted.
there also was a thread going around that some fuels. I think shell was one of them had something eating away at the fuel pump sending unit and that if you switched gas and used some techron it dissolved the issue. I saw pawpaw post something about it.

Yeah, I think I read that somewhere during my "research" (pawpaw's screen name seems very familiar from a LOT of threads). It has something to do with ethanol in fuel these days and it dissolving the rubber tubing in/on the fuel pump.

There was a post about a solution for it involving replacing the tubing with tubing that had a plastic "liner" in it.

I'll keep the forum updated on this as I need to procure a fuel pressure gauge (I saw the Harbor Freight one for $19.95) but there is an AutoZone near me so it may pay to "rent" it rather than buy one for the amount of times I'll use one...then again $20 is cheap! I don't know if AutoTap reads fuel pressure, but then again, I haven't used it much other than to diagnose codes and reset the SES lamp (only on my 1999 Pontiac Grand Prix GT, so far). It paid for itself on the first diagnosis...:icon_thumby:

Thanks and stay tuned!

P.S. Original_Ranger84 - I think I tried that, too.

Joe

easiest way to lift a bed is to run 2 straps diagonally from each corner to the opposite corner. Where the 2 straps intersect use a engine hoist with the boom extended all the way out. Attach & lift, Simple & no sweat. one man operation
