Basic tune up 3.0 V6?


just as it would with a distributor setup , a cmp is just a distributor without a top , it has a rod that extends down that a rod that is hexdrive from the oil pump fits into , and when the cam spins , it turns the gear , which in turn drives the oil pump

and dont worry about not knowing , i did not get how it worked either , until i had completly disassembled my engine
 
i drove mine for a month with a failing cmp , mine would sporadicaly lose oil pressure , so i thought it was the pressure switch

lol, I bet you had one hand on the key waiting to turn that sucker off if your oil pressure dropped knowing the CPS was on its last leg. I should have said that differently... its quite possible for the CPS to fail without warning. Sometimes it gives off a distinct squeal or chirp (similar to that of a serpentine belt) toward the rear of the engine.

If you choose to do this yourself it will cost $60-$70 dollars. A shop might want closer to $250ish depending on where you live.
 
Not to be a pedant, but since this thread has already taken a major swerve from basic tune-up to replacing the >>>CMP<< synchronizer gear assembly...

I just want to point out that the proper acrnonym--used in ALL relevant service manuals--is CMP, as in CaMshaft Position sensor... and a million internet threads mis-labeling it CPS will not change the tried and true service manuals.

NOT to be confused w/ the *real* CPS, as in Crankshaft Position Sensor, which is at the other end of the engine, i.e. that big gear with one missing tooth, mounted on crankshaft, right behind the drivebelt pulley. Actually the CPS is the little IR "flashlight" pointed at the big gear, waiting for that missing tooth to go by... just in case the PCM is interested, lol.

(Infrared, or is it a magnetic Hall-effect gizmo? Not sure it's worth losing a finger to find out... :icon_confused: )
 
Here are pics , i though mine was going so i bought a new sensor and synchro , i got mine from ford as a dealership , my stepdad has one and my cost for both was around 110 , the thing in the bag is the sensor , the other is the synchro

I believe the CPS is an inductive pickup, neither IR, or Hall effect.
 
Whenever I get a new (to me) truck I usually do a service on it. Plugs, wires, oil change, air filter, pcv, grease all the greaseable parts, check for bad bushings, and try to find more reasons to work on my truck. I change diff fluids and trans/tcase fluids while i'm down there. Then extend the breathers if its going wheeling
