Bang/Pop/Lurch on Engine Braking

Since noone has addressed this, what year is her truck. Auto hubs ran til I believe 96, 97-98 was PVM hubs and 98 and newer were live axle setups no hubs. I may be a year off, but either way. Use 4x4 hi for downhill, and 4lo for uphill. Its most likely just binding, tell her to take it out in a grassy field and hammer it in 4 lo. If its just binding then you wont have any popping in the soft traction ground. Sometimes even slippery gravel is to much traction for 4lo.

ya need to read the very first post the very first sentance.......and the chains in these like to stretch when used ALOT on harder surfaces

Use 4 hi downhill with the truck in 1st and foot off the clutch. To above poster, It says its a 2004 right in the original post.

The transfer case on my 02 Ranger started doing something like this under warranty at around 20,000 miles. I took it to the dealer and they ordered a new transfer case but Ford would not authorized them to install it. They would only authorize installing a new chain and rebuilding of that area because they also thought it was due to chain stretch. When I picked it up, I immediately took it for a drive and it was still doing the same thing.

I took it right back to the dealer and asked them to save themselves, Ford and me; time, money and inconvenience by installing a new transfer case. They did that and it solved the problem. As far as I know, they never did find out what was wrong with the original one. The dealer had it all apart and could find nothing wrong. However, they couldn't even get the manual shift linkage adjusted correctly so I don't know how qualified they were at repairing a transfer case. I adjusted the linkage myself and everything is still working great at almost 120,000 miles.

The problem with my transfer case started after I backed up a steep dirt trail in 4WD low onto a paved road. It did bind a little on the paved road because I had to turn a little. I suspect it tweaked something in the transfer case to cause the problem.

You may get lucky and fix the problem with a new chain but there is at least one other thing that can go bad to cause this problem. Unfortunately, I don't know what it is.
