Bad crash near our home

A lot of modern transmissions won't allow that. They won't make a downshift that will damage the trans. It will neutral out or stay in it's current gear.

At that speed, if thrown into park, at best it would just strip out the pawl and gear.

Ding, Ding, Ding, the truck in the original photo looked to be a newer Duramax which would have had an allison transmission. Throwing it in park at anything above 10MPH or so would have gotten you a "Ding" from the truck and a message in the odometer window saying, "Range Shift Inhibited" I own one.

Yeah. The reason for this is because a "shelled transmission" is not necessarily better than plowing into something. If the tranny case grenades the resulting shrapnel can easily penetrate the floor pan and the occupants causing extensive injuries and be just as deadly as the accident you were trying to avoid.

Not to stir up any arguments, but a very close friend of mine had his seatbelt crack a rib which then punctured his right lung. He would have died on the scene if he wasn't so close to a hospital.

Then one of three other conditions was also present.

1) He was going too fast.

2) He wasn't wearing it properly

3) He has some medical condition or dietary deficiency that weakens his bones.

During proper use by the average healthy adult, that should not happen.

Gotta love how people/press/cops ALWAYS make it a point to say "They weren't wearin their seatbelt". Like it would of made a difference, NOT! If the public got the same type of info on the incidents that the seatbelt killed em or if they would of been wearin it they would of been killed. Happened just 2 weeks ago to a guy I work withs Step-Daughter, she turned to their Granddaughter who was in the back seat in a child seat, and vered off the road, hit 2 trees at 70mph, she wasn't wearin her seatbelt, got thrown out of the car, she had 2 broke legs, broken heal, & cracked ribs, but she's alive.........the car was a early 2000's Cavalier, the dash was pushed back to the front seat, if she'd of been wearin the seatbelt, her legs would of been crushed, she'd of been pinned, and probably bled to death. The Granddaughter also suffered a broken leg even in the car seat.

That's why it should be a CHOICE, not a LAW!!!
:icon_rofl::icon_rofl::icon_rofl::icon_rofl:
dont wear a seatbelt, and smoke the nearest tree at 80mph. i dont expect to hear the results from you.

people get lucky. but seatbelts will never be a choice. just like drinking under age isnt a choice, and niether is heroin, crack, or cocaine.

Seat belts do save lives!!!! Some people that get crushed by a bridge falling on them might not make it, but I will always wear a seat belt...even if I drive around the block to blow off my fresh washed rides...always.

'Nuff Said'

Ouch. That sucks.

As per the seatbelt comments - whoever said that they have heard of more deaths from people wearing seatbelts than people not wearing seatbelts, what is the sample size on your poll? Ever consider that your statistics are flawed since MORE people wear seatbelts than those who don't?

For Seatbelt's Sake

I went 80 into the off ramp on the new Zakim bridge in Boston going north bound. If I'd of not worn my seatbelt... I'd of been doing an Airborne OP off the bridge. I could barely move my right side for a week. I wear Seatbelt's, and I'll trust my life to it anyday. Also my Nissan altima front end was completely smashed, but not pushed to drivers seat and I hit head on. That is why I love my Nissan so much. Foreign or not. Maybe others are made better for impacts, but that 2005 3.5SL has my faith in it.

Don't give me this bullshit. Every person who refuses to wear a seatbelt has some stupid story like this. This is one of those "one in a million" things.

My buddy broke his nose on the steering of his '78 F-150 and another friend that was in the passenger seat busted his tooth out on the dash and broke his ankle, neither of them were wearing seatbelts. If they had been wearing one I bet money that neither of them would have had to go to the hospital. Just a couple weeks ago we had a car in at work that was in a minor accident, woman rearended another car, less than 25mph, airbag didn't even deploy. Busted out her windshield and left a nice clump of blond hair hanging from it, if I was the insurance company I would have loved to tell her to go pound salt on the windshield for being an idiot.

Stupidest part is me friends STILL don't wear seatbelts. Why you ask? "Because they're uncomfortable." Give me a break, quit being stupid and wear your seatbelt.

But I guess you're right, it should be a choice, like smoking cigarettes. If you want to kill yourself go right ahead. Until then, I'm going to keep on wearing mine, thats one less thing I can get a ticket for.

I recently drove past an accident with another similar GM 1ton

Idiot got into the center divider approching an overpast REMOVED
(and nearly accordian folded) 100feet of guardrail with the posts
still attached (along with a lump of concrete) and then stuffed his
truck INVERTED between the concrete ramp supporting the
overpass and the beams where his truck burned to a paintless
crispy critter...

I rolled down my window and asked the cop directing traffic "Drunk?"

Cop replied "Yep! AND felony evasion... (then in a rather dry tone of voice) I'll arrest him when they get him out..."

I've been a volunteer fireman for over twenty years and have seen the results of not wearing a seat belt. Only once have a I seen a guy thrown from a car and live. He now gets around in a wheelchair.
